Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Do Cichlids get worms?

Hi all,

Having gotten over my heater problem I now have another problem. I introduced two juvenile new fish last weekend (purchased from a reputable LFS in South Dublin) and today, after giving the tank a good feed, I noticed what appeared to be 2-3 inch long fairly transparent 'strings' coming out of where the fish normally excrete their poo. There is a reasonable flow in the tank so they appear to be 'wriggling' but that could be my paranoia!!

Any comments? Do I need to 'dose' the tank and if so how do I do that safely?

All input very welcome.

Will try and get a picture but that could take some time.

Regards,

Ben

could just be poo, but without a pic difficult to say possibly could be inetrnal parasites / worms

middle pic looks like a pair of specs and a nose.
it looks too thick to be a parasitic worm other than possibly a tape worm.
what species is the fish?
platy would probably be the best man to help with diagnosis and cure (if neccessary) in this case.
try for clearer pictures.

Hi Derek,

You're right the middle pic does look like a pair of specs!!

My initial reaction was tapeworm but I'm not sure. Will try to get a better pic.

If it's tapeworm whats the solution?

ben, i just had a look at your tank on the other post and it looks really nice and very healthy looking fish.
if its a piscivore such as livingstoni and eating the normal fish food, it might explain the thick trailing faeces and it would'nt be a problem. either way even if it is worms, its not that big a problem and when platy or daragh owens see your post they will give you the best advice.

Quite hard to tell from the photo. I don't think it is tapeworm. Seems to rounded. I think it is more than lightly as you say poo. As Derek pointed out it could be diet related.
If you cant get a better picture. Can you describe the worm. Also dose the fishes gut seem pinched or hollowed?
