Changing Tanks
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'm hoping to upgrade my tank next week. Tank will be in the shop on Thursday and hopefully with me a couple of days later.
Its a 3ftx2ftx2ft clear seal tank with sumo (approx volume 400l).
I was just wondering what is the best way the swap the fish offer?
I have 100l tank with 2 convicts in them. The other tank with fronts, leiupi will need to go into the convicts tanks for a bit.
Should I be transferring sand and everything over for water parameters? What about filtration? I have a U2&U1 in with the convicts. Would this do for a short period of time?
I'll be using the existing filter media for the sump. Just wondering how long will the bacteria live when its unplugged to swap the tanks out?

i had to do the same thing awhile back, this is what i done..
i put my new tank beside the old one and pumped the water from the old one into the new one
while taking out rocks and bogwood etc, when the old tank was about half empty i transfered the fish
into the new tank.
when i had all the water out of the old tank i removed the sand/gravel into buckets,
then pulled out the old tank and tranfered water and fish back into it using the same method,
(if you have a spare tank or somewhere to house the fish for a few hours that would work better!, unfortunately i didnt! so had to do it this way)
then put your new tank in place, and add your gravel, bogwood etc and pump back in your water and fish,
then just top up with treated water, i ran both old and new filters for about 3/4 weeks after,
hope this makes sense, the whole job was done in a few hours, and your still using your cycle water and filter,
so if you run your old filters along with your sump for about a month it should work fine
good luck.

Good logic there
What I might do is pump the water out of the convict tank. Transfer the cycled water from the tank that will be upgraded to the convict tank and house some fish there.
I will try and get a big bucket and house the remainder in that with a heater and filter running.

I saw cheap buckets/containers that hold up to 60 litres in woodies; hope this will help in keeping some 'precious' good cycled water off your floor!
