Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

well folks I had my usual gaze into tank this evening and to my amazment I spotted 1 fry hiding under a rock, then i spotted another, for a while i wasnt even sure who the mother was let alone the father, unfortunatly there is a lot of activity from the other fish in the tank and then witnessed a lupei catch a fry (nuff said, rip little fella), so what should I do, I would like to see them grow , shoud I just catch fry and put in another tank and leave parents alone, i am guess she is holding more, tank is approx 440 lts with malawi and a couple of tangs in for good measure, bout 19 fish in total,
any advice is much appreciated,
thanks
T

Congrats! Its between the devil and the deep blue sea now unfortunately; its good to remove the fries but during the process they might be eaten...if you leave them they will also be eaten...:(

The fittest will survive now so just pray i guess

which fish is it from? and are any parents protecting them?

i have leleupi going nuts with pumping out the fry, a few batches disappeared but the last 3 have survived. if you remove them then do it when they are free swimming, not before. and mind you dont suck the parents into the hose (use it as a syphon to suck out the fry) they will go for it when you put it near the spawn site

looks like there has been an overnight cull :( , i needed a few hours to setup 2nd tank last night and tried to catch a few this morning, i could only see about 3 and I think they are all out of mothers mouth. I have the slimline background and they are hiding in the wee gaps between the panels, and short of taking all rocks out its nearly impossible to catch them, especially when dashing out to work. I am due to work on tank this sat morning, (monthly water change) and I'll try then,
I am 99% sure it was the female vensuvius and I am think thing the dad is tinyurl.com/2c646j9
the only 'pair' I have are yellow labs and the male is not in the best of shape (was thinking of putting him into a seperate tank anyway) so I it was a total surprise to see them. I cant say I noticed her swollen mouth (buccal) but i will keep a closer eye on her in a few weeks as hopefully she will go again.
