Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Good luck with that, i've had Labs and Demasoni hold full term on their first attempts so it is possible.
Even if she doesnt, she'll get the hang of it soon and in a few months you wont know what to do with
all the fry, cos once they start breeding theres no stoppin em!

"I hope she doesn't Swallow"if some one clicked on this forum by mistake, they might think this is not a fish forum!!:laugh:If its her first time holding she may spit or swallow the eggs, you could strip and tumble the eggs. You can buy thumlers from eBay or "Kens fish" but by the time they arrive the eggs could be fry or swallowed.
This a tumbler..

I wouldn't even know where to start with stripping her, how does the tumbler work? It might be a bit extreme on her first time. The male had her pestered and wouldn't leave her alone so I suppose she had to give in to him eventually, I've had them since they were juvies so I'm delighted she's holding, if she goes full term it'll be a bonus.

Stripping eggs is much easier the stripping fry,IMO..the tumbler has airline which is connected to an air pump and gently tumbles the eggs the same way the mother does.YouTube have tons of vids on this;) .

Fry are happy in the mothers mouth, and fell safe in there so when you attempt to remove them by stripping they tend to try swim back in to the mouth.Stripping eggs is just easier, but you have to tumble them straight away in a bare cycled tank and don't change any water.

Good time to strip if thats what you were plannin on doing. I stripped one of my Demasonis yesterday which
was day 18 and the fry are always free swimming at that stage, they might have a little bit of the egg left but
should be safe to strip. Have another Demasoni holding for a couple of days and a yellow lab il strip in about
4 days.
If you dont want to strip you can get breeder boxes that have 2 sections and you hook it up to an air pump
which slowly pumps water from the big compartment to the smaller one allowing any fry that she spits to go
in there unharmed.

Iv had a female socolofi scince she was a juvie and she went the whole way on her first time i didnt strip her at all i just removed her from the main tank on the 20th day or so and put her in a holding tank on her own! long and behold she went the whole way and spit them in her own time by looking at her i would still class her as a juvie so was surprised when i saw her holding she spat 25 fry in the end shame i had to cull them all scince they were hybreds ;)

Well i knew mine were hybreds and that i would be culling them and i had never stript before so didn see the point on putting her through the stress for fry i would be culling,,, on the other hand if i know there pure i might try striping in the future, but damien if your planning on keeping these fry and want to let it happen naturally i would suggest moving her into a small holding tank with no fish other wise she will be bullied quite a lot and if she spits in the main tank theres a real high chance they will become fish food for all your other cichlids:laugh:

My impatience got the better of me today. Tomorrow would have been day 28 so I decided to strip her. It was my first attempt at doing it, she had 17 fry, all doing well so far. part of me feels bad for not letting her spit in her own time though. At least the fry are safe now.

You're better off strippin I think, it saves the mother going too long without eating.
