Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello all, I am in need of some advise please;

Been out of fish keeping for quite a while, Will be setting up a tank soon and will be needing some fish. I'm wondering if can anyone tell me if there is any shop stocking a good selection of Malawi's of a decent size and Reasonably priced?

Also does anyone know where I can buy a Green Terror auquedens rivulatus?

Only shops in Dublin as I don't drive.
Thanks folks.

Hey man as the lads said and offered some fish to be found here!!! But 1 shop in dublin and the only shop i would consider for malawis is FINS,FURS AND FEATHERS. They have recently started bringing in f1 and wild caught africans (tanganyka and malawi) and the prices are great aswell as the quality of fish plus the lads are a great help iv recently grabed a few of there amazing stock and couldnt be more happy ;) best spot in dub IN MY OPINOION!!!!! well worth a look

jim. all of the dublin shops stock malawis to a degree. of the ones i frequent, petstop and seahorse normally have good supplies and fintastic in dun laoire also sell good healthy fish.
unless you have more than one tank the malawis and aequidens would not be acceptable tankmates.
hope this helps.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

Thanks Everyone, hopefully will be buying next week (After stealing mature water from a friend:P), will definitely check out fins, furs and feathers in swords, any shop that doesn't default to Glen-K fish has my respect. ciaranm will defo give you a shout thanks very much!

Hi Derek, I know African and American cichlids generally don't mix well but I've found a single GT can live in a well stocked Malawi tank without problems, Tank bred GT's can live happily in PH as high as 8 with Malawi, as can some CA Cichlids who come from brackish water. As long as the tank is extremely well filtered and slightly crowded the aggression levels don't get out of control. That and careful selection of Malawi species. I have another smaller tank on standby at all times for isolating if a fish is in trouble.

I have always gone for biotope aquariums but this time, I intend on creating a show tank featuring medium sized stunning Cichlids.

Best of luck with it m8 ;) to each and there own but as said above africans should be only kept with africans aequidens come from a different part of the world it speaks for itself! Anyway good luck and keep us posted ;)

Some American cichlids mix better with African cichlids then some other Africans do. In parts of Peru where Aequidens Rivulatus make there home, water parameters are not unlike the rift lakes. Hard and high PH. Its more about the aggression and stress levels of a cichlid tank then it is about PH.

Most fish in the hobby are tank bred for generations and can live happily in water that is different to what theyre wild counterparts require. GT is no exception to that rule.

So Yes I admit it, I am a mixer!

Here a vid of Haps, Mbuna and 1 GT living happily.

Anyway I havent decided on anything 100% I need to see whats on offer in the shops. Ideally I would love a CA/SA medium sized community but the more colorful cichlid species are a rare find here so I will probably go for a mainly hap tank.

Ian here i dont know about the rest of Dublin but we normally have over 50 tanks of malawis and other rift valley cichlids in stock.....we will have some wild stock from the lake itself very shortly i am trying to make space by selling off an lot of the smaller stock....hopefully we have 800 x 4 inch africans in from the far east as soon as their holidays come to an end........i have over 200 africans in our shop display so i hope this answers your question!
