Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

At 32 to 34 C.....that is when Discus cost a lot of money and good quality heaters to keep. :)

igmillichip,
I got a shock with my discus tank yesterday.
When feeding them I notice that the water was cold.
I keep them at 30C but the temperature had dropped to 22C.
The day before I was attaching a second external filter to the tank and had managed to loosen the heater connection. I did not discover it until returning from work the next day by that time the temperature has dropped to 22C as the house was cold with the current weather conditions.
The Discus did not appear any worse the ware for the few hours in the low temperature and the water is now back up to normal 30C overnight. No problems showing at present. I was afraid that the lower temperature would cause their eyes to go cloudy which I had seen some time ago in a dealer's tank where they had lost power over night.
Have you experienced any problems with Discus if kept in low temperatures for an extended period of time

Dropping to 22C should do no harm to a healthy discus, a few days at that temp also should do no real harm.

If the temperature drops and the fish stop feeding, then don't feed is a good rule.

If the tank is manky in the first place, then a drop in temperature will reduce the immunity of the fish and they will succumb to the mank in the tank.

There are times when I have dropped the temp for a while when first receiving discus....but that is a delicate balance between keeping their metabolism going and not increasing the effects of various toxic compounds.

I actually find that discus kept at a constant temp day and night day-in/day-out become somewhat sluggish and don't really do that well in the long run. Hence, I allow a slight drop in temp ay night and a small drop in winter by not having over-powerful heaters. My longest lived discus were kept that way.

If you have a power-outage, then the biggest problem is not temp but lack of filtration.

Why do breeders insist on producing Albino this and long finned that? Nature has made them perfect, man ALWAYS insists on going one better. Sorry, let me rephrase that, trying to go one better.

@eugene
No probs, just change that gravel and start thinking about putting in some plants maybe. They add a lot to the overall looks of the tank.
@stretnik
I'd say that we do those things cuz we can and that's what fuels the progress in general ;)

Bart,
Are you importing/selling Discus.
Do throw up any pictures if available.
Let me know I will be looking to increase my Discus stock in the new 5 foot tank when setup.
