Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The aetiology of Hole in the Head is not as simple as it "going from the tank".

It is primarily due to the way in which the discus are kept (eg food and water conditions), and then has secondary things kick in. Effectively, by using the medications you've tackled the secondary problems of it but not the primary causes.

I assume that you are buing RO water??........if so, are you then re-generating it for use in the tank by adding the appropriate additives?

Food?? what are they being fed?

Eugene,
The recommened treatment for Discus Hole in the head is..
1) Do a 35% water change (use R/O water for changes) and wipe down all sides of the aquarium.
2) Treat with Aquatic salt.
3) Treat with a course of water life Octozin.

Waterlife Octozin is a medication that I would recommend to anyone (especially if you have Discus) as it is a rather good anti-bacterial agent as well as having effects on flagellates.

It will not cure Hole-in-the-Head, but it will deal with the secondary problems caused by the initial cause.

Water way too low in certain electroplytes (eg using overly "pure" water or RO in the case of Discus) plus a diet lacking a good range of vitamins or contra-indicatory to those vitamins are the causes of hole in the head.
General balance of the diet is important to make sure that the gut function is not compromised.

I've never had hole-in-the-head in my fish, but have done autopsies on many fish that have.....and all tended to have the same history.

The problems can be aggrevated by having dirty water (increased chance of bacterial infection in open skin), or having a gut worm or other gut parasite infection.
It is very difficult to remove those parasites from the water (they are natural to the fish gut), but if conditions are not right then those parasites can get to a pathogenic state.

What should be done is to ascertain if aggrevating factors are not at play......this would include a simple swab of their faeces and put under a microscope to look for, in particular, Hexamita or Spironucleus, or Capillaria worm. Whilst they do not cause the problem, they can aggrevate it or become secondary problems in hole-in-the-head.
