Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Have 5 discus in my tank (350l) for the past 3 months, I'm doing weekly water change and test the water regularly. Out of the 5, 2 of them are blue and appear very dark almost black during the days, this been happening in the last 3 days or so also noticed that the other 3 are always changing them away from food during feeding time. Should I worried about the situation or is this normal behaviour. Compare to the others this 2 haven't grow much at all.

The answer is Yes and Yes.

This is normal behaviour for discus, but normal does not necessarily measn good.

Discus can be awful bullies (physical and psychological). The bullying can reach a level leading to death.

So, you need to take a close look at things.

Maybe re-decorate the tank is good starting point. Feed in more than one place.
Watch to see if all discus are feeding.

You also have to watch the Discus doing the chasing.....sometimes a bully discus can be so intent on bullying others that it doesn't eat.

Now,in all of this we are assuming the water is good........what are the water parameters, age of fish, and food?

Nitrite And ammonia are at 0, nitrate are always between 10 and 20, ph around the 6.6 mark, kh varie between 2 and 3. Food wise I give them a mix of beef heart, frozen bloodworm and different kind of granule. They are still young discus, just add wormer plus a few days ago as I was worried of the situation. Notice at night that the 2 dark discus get their colour back!!!!

Add a few plants or bog-wood.

If you have wormed them, then also make sure that the medication is not having any negative effects.

I'm a little surious as to why they needed worming though unless they are wild caught.

Will see how I can change the decor around to start to stop the bulling. Just hope it's not anything like a bacteria or disease. Just worm them in case of something serious.

It depends on the medication used.

Different ones will have different therapeutic windows (dose that cures close to dose that kills etc). Overdosing is naturally something to be careful of.

Then there is chronic toxicity of using the medications at the right or lower dose but over an extended period of time. Some may cause kidney or brain problems.

My recommendation as the first medication of choice for Discus is Waterlife's Octozin. It is an antibiotic that will also deal with certain intestinal infections.

Ok will monitored the situation over the next few days, also 1 of this discus is often shaking. On a good note just witness a couple of corydoras laying eggs all over the tank.
