Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

May be a swim bladder infection. Difficult to advise if you should treat, in my experience treating these infections with over the counter cures is very rarely effective. Like us a fishes immune system is effected by stress. If the fish was stressed during the move (when you bought him or before) then its immune system will be compromised and latent infections will raise their ugly heads. Treating can induce more stress if you have to isolate, medicate etc so often the best approach is to leave them be and remove all stress. i.e keep perfect water quality, feed (dont overfeed), remove and aggressive fish, introduce an area for the sick fish to hide etc. Hope this helps.

Guys I am using that thread as I am seeing one of my discus slightly tilting face down and clamping dorsal fin and a lot more calm than usual. He is not getting bullied at all and all other discus in the tank look fine. He is eating and the body does not show any sign of anything wrong but i noticed right away the forward tilt.
Just syphoned all the dirt, did a 20% water change and threw in 3 big spoonfuls of salt.
Any ideas or recommendations please I am very new at this. I was fighting nitrites for a while so loads of water changes but been testing nil for nitrites for a few days now. Second picture is less representative as he did raise the dorsal when i went to take the picture.

You have to be careful here.

Normal healthy discus fish have a slightly head-down position anyway, so care needs to be taken mis-identifying that for a disorder.

However, swim-bladder troubles can cause a head-down or a head-up position as part of the symptoms.
So we cannot rule out swim-bladder either.

But take care not to take too much notice of swim-bladder disorder diagnosis and treatment that has an origin in goldfish and similar fish as the anatomy of the swim bladder in discus is not the same as goldfish.

Looking at the picture, I don't see anything that would concern me just yet.....but that could be just the photo.

Me neither Ian. Noeleire, I had a discus that was severely bloated a few years back and ended up swimming head down, not entirely down but 45 down. I used an Epsom salt bath (Epsom salts are cheap as chips at he chemist) - can't rem the dosage or time I left the fish (think it was only 30min or so) but it emptied the fishes stomach and prob fixed.....

Still have her and she's a fully grown beauty now.......loads of info online re the correct dose and timing.......when I say a bath, it's a simple bucket but keep a close eye on him/her......

Ive never kept discus so im making general observations, your fish is holding its bright colour very well, sick fish lose their colour, I cant see much swelling only a normal full tummy. It does seem to be breading heavy but not in any stress. May be just constipated, try feeding peas like peti pois, or not feeding for 3 days. Hope it gets better for you, its a lovely fish.

Thank Paul,
it is a lovely fish and one from my first batch of Discus, so special to me..Very healthy and lively all the time. He is fine this morning probably needed to "unload" hahaha. This only happened yesterday and i could see it was bothering him as he didn't eat last night. Looking good now.

Good to hear he is ok now. Peas are great source of roughage for fish, helps them "unload".
