Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hello,
I feel the forum does not get enough input in the Discus thread. That includes myself.
Perhaps there are only 5 Discus keepers in ireland :) , but no I don't believe that.
Perhaps you are all busy with water changes...
Anyhow I'd like to invite fellow Discus keepers to "share more" their experience or at least pictures of their setups: we are always looking for information, tips, inspiration and help for treatments and I think that by writing a bit more on the forum we would have more success.
That also works to buy/sell breeding pairs, fry, etc....

Also, for the ones near Dublin (I am willing to drive a few kms), perhaps an occasional meetup or get-together could be arranged. I am not saying to open your house to 15 strangers but let's get to know each other as we all work hard to have decent setups and I am sure we take pride in "showing off" such setups (at least I am :) ).
So the invitation is out there... Enjoy the day off!

Count me in Stephane! I def have so much more to learn and who best to learn off other than from those that have by far more experience than me! Actually, I think we can all get some inspiration, input and lessons from others no matter how experienced they are....Brian

Hi Stephan, lately I spend little time on the forum, few things keeping me busy but that shouldn't be an excuse, BUT if anybody needs some advice and he can't find it in here can send me a PM with the link to the tread and i'll make sure that i'll check it out.

Yep, ill add to this :)

only been a discus owner for about a week now.
I have 3 Pigeon Bloods about 2 inch, and 2 red Fires about 1.5 inches long

When I first added to my tank (750 litre) they grouped together and stayed in the corner alot.
The biggest one is the most difficult to feed, he wont eat the tetra prima like the rest, but goes nuts for brine shrimp.
I've been feeding him this so that he can get use to me and stop hidding - this is starting to work and doesn't run away when he see's me now.
But I know that there isn't alot in brine shrimp.

There are some guppies in the tank also so I'm hoping he likes to hunt for new born's. (as I'm already seeing some new guppies in the tank)

Other than that all is well,

They are coming into colour, the bullying is taking place over food and they are out in the open most days.

Alot of work is going into feeding and getting them use to me, but I'm away for a few days next week so i only hope the auto feeder will be enough for them...

Its a high-tech tank, so it will be challenging :)

Discus are one of my favourite fish, but I just get very bored talking about them (unless it is about Discus science or removing all the myths from hobby)

But, as always, I would always help out on discussions of fish health and water health if I am free.

I don'tdo water changes on the new tank, it's all automated.
I just tell it how many drips per min  and top up the declorinator every now and then. :)
The old water drips down the drain

Well, they are coming over to me at feeding time, it's so easy to fall in love with these guys.

The fish colour will change a lot depending on the lighting bulb you are using.

Blue scorpion and blue pigeon blood
File Attachment:

Blue turquoise and Maurice !!! (supposedly white butterfly but looks like pigeon blood...)

Red melon are pigeon blood based so they don't have stress bars but may show peppering. :)

Hi Guys,
I am expecting DARKSLICE to collect 2 discus from my apartment on Sunday afternoon (Accross from Kilmainham Jail museum in Dublin 8). I thought I would extend the invitation to other discus keepers to come over, have a chat, look at the fish (i have 5/6 tanks with Discus), exchange advice etc..
I prefer to keep this focused on Discus keepers for obvious reasons. PM me if you are a Discus keeper and would like to come over.
My home is open to you but please no unannounced visits: PM first we can exchange names, numbers and we will take it from there.
I also saw the ITFS announcement for tonight's meeting: they mention a fish show in London, it also mentions Discus so I would be keen to attend this event.

Think I'm gonna give these ago. Cutting down to one tank so I'll have the time. Once I'm cycled and replanted.

Discus can be fussy so my best suggestion is a bare bottom tank. If the fish are pretty and healthy enough you will never notice the lack of substrate. you are welcome to visit me and see the setup.
