Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi folks!

Can someone please help me with determining the gender of this snakeskin? He/She is about 7/8 months old.

Apologies about the poor quality of the pics but the camera flash/bright lighting in the tank seem to spook him/her.

Thanks

Hi Tigger,

As far as i know they are no real method to help you sex your discus apart from watching them breed... Some people say that the angle of the fins could help, some say that the anal fins could help but i really don't know.

Now what i can tell you from my own pairs, male tend to be rounder than the female. Especially regarding the belly and anal part. That is an observation on my 3 proven pair.

So after looking at your fish, i would say that it is a male. (i have a pair of blue snake skin too )

I am no expert and i hope someone else could help you !

Thank you. Inza.

I have a proven male and proven female in my tank. I will take a good look at them and give you my best guess :)

At that small size it can be awkward from the angels the pictures are taken.

The best thing to do is to tempt the fish to raise it's head up near the front of the glass when facing you......you then look at its bits and pieces (external genitals).

Within the general oval shape of the genitals opening you will see a smaller "circle" inside.
If that smaller circle is almost the same size as the outter most oval then read as female; if it is almost a fine point then read as male.
As the fish mature you will notice that that inner most "circle/oval" will protrude away from the body a little (and it gets pretty profound when breeding as well).....a broad flattened protrosion is female; a spikey protrosion is male: and note that if near spawning this is very visible.

Other methods of sexing using the sex organs takes a bit of experience to do (eg looking at the internal organs by candelling).

Methods that make claims using fins/colours/forehead are not very accurate and will only work at certain stages of maturity and then only if the individual fish is showing some profound wild-type traits.

I agree with Ian, it's impossible to tell from these pics, we can only guess :)
