Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I saw my angelfish and cory flashing or flicking onto some rocks this morning. What worries me is that the Discus might be infected as well. I raised the temperature to 30 degrees. I will do a 30% water change and see what would happen. Nothing is visible on the skin...so not sure what it might be.

ok.. if they are having any trouble breathing, or breathing out of one gill as well, its most probably gill flukes.. watch for white of transparent poo.. if there doesnt seem to be anything else then body flukes or some other external parasite. The only way to tell for sure is with a scope.

if the temp can be up'ed again over the next few days, try that.. for any real benefit of a temp change you want to up it to 34 this week

watch the fish closely and monitor any changes.. flukes is unlikely to kill an adult fish so dont worry to much just yet.. lets see what happens over the next week..

where abouts are you, because i could possibly do a scrape for you.

plenty of clean water is always a good thing.. whats your water params? any new fish recently? change of decor?

Adam,
One of my mollies has transperant poo at present. Long and stringy and transperent. What would this be a symptom of?
I have treated her for finrot and its clearing and thought she had whitespot last week but Melafix seems to have fixed both of the above health problems. But noticed the poo last night. What would this be ?

Sorry for hi jacking this thread Niko.
Gavin

Hi Fishowner..

If it last longer than one poo then it will most probably be some kind of internal parasite.. IME melafix doesnt really do much as its very weak. i have found that plenty of clean water and an increase in tank hygiene, wipe downs etc, will do a better job than melafix and your fish will thank you for it. (not saying your tank is not clean Gavin :))

if her immune system has been weakened then its most probably a secondary infection and would separate her into quarantine. feed her good quality foods and monitor for signs of her going down hill. such as becoming thin and spending lots of time in the corner or generally on the bottom feeling sorry for herself..

you could try a wormer product.. if you are not far away from me (blanch) i can give you some wormer plus for your tank.. (as long as its not 300 gallons ;))

HTH

Thanks Adam,
Im in Cork so cant take you up on the offer.
However the fish being alone in the corner and not being themselves is very much the case for the other molly in the tank.He has been v strange recently and is quite thin and very nervous looking also. I also lost a molly fry (who was about 3 months old and just seemed to go downhill v suddenly dispite parameters being fine. I do keep a clean tank but I think I am going to do 20% water changes every 3 days for the next 2 weeks. I think this should improve the tank hopefully,I definetly need to clean the sponge in the filter also.

Thanks Adam, hopefully these twice weekly water changes will improve the tank alot. I will admit Ive eased off the water changes recent which up to about 6 weeks ago were religiously done every 7 days,Ive noticed Ive drifted it out to 10 days and even 2 weeks at one stage over the past few weeks. I know I need to get back to schedule on it,my new kitten has been the distraction Im ashamed to say!!

it is hard to keep the regime going, dont i know it.. :)

she is at a stage where you need to act, do you have a spare tank? if so get the affected fish into quarantine as they will have a very low immune system and any parasites could be in the water column. water change, water change water change.. the biggest you can do now:) and clean that sponge ;)

Get them into a QT, doesnt have to be to big.. but get them in there and away from healthy fish..

can you list your water params please and fish/inverts you have in there at the moment?

give your LFS a call and see if they can get wormer plus for you quickly.. its surprising how fast and hungry they get after a worming.. :)
