What do people do with their baby discus?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just wondering what people do with the offspring of their discus? Would love to get into them but find it hard to justify paying huge sums for perfect adult specimens of the species? Never seen juveniles in shops though so am wondering where they disappear to for their teenage years...

they are selling some 2" ones in the Petshop in Gullivers(off Ballymun Road) for €30...
problem with small ones is working out if they are runts.
i believe the best way to judge is the size of their eyes. Big eyes on a small fish is a no no

Must call down for a look at some point so, thanks.
Would prefer something much smaller though, would like to go through the whole process of rearing into adults. Have no problem with runts either, I always thought the beauty of a fish lies more in their character than their colour. Just ask my one eyed Catfish, blinky!

I agree about the character thing, none of my discus are 100% "perfect" and neither am I for that matter

but (and I could be wrong) discus under 4 months old (less than 1 inch) are a very big risk to buy as they just aren't as hardy as older fish...
Probably best you go for 2" fish minimum just so you get your moneys worth.

I would personally stay away from there any fish i have got out off there hasnt been the best infact most have died with in hours i got two red tailed sharks both had white stop and i was told by people working there that they are young and thats just the way they are and it will go when they get older bullsh*t...
I have got fish of two other pet shops and i have had no deaths at all.
Also that shop is my local and i was given wrong info on the different times about fish, cycling and sickness needless to say if i was going to buy discus i would stick to aquatic stores because they would have alot more knowledge and experience with these fish and they would be able to help you alot more then a general pet shop.
I would look at the sponsor section of the forum and ask some of the people there if they can help with getting the discus you are lookin for.
