Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,

Got a lovely pair of A.agassizi fire red. They settled in great, noticed the male acting off yesterday hiding in the plants in the top left of the tank.

When im watching him swim his tail fin is always closed never open. he is still eating etc but his tail fin is always closed and doesnt use his tail to swim...

Done the usual tested the water etc all is fine, all other fish are fine and eating great. They were starting do show off untill yesterday when i seen him acting off. Doesnt seem to have any injuries that i can see.

Havnt come across this before there is only one other pair of apistos in the tank A njsseni but havnt noticed any issues between them they are on either side of the tank.

Has any any idea on what this could be his behavour is very strange hanging round the top of the tank, not using his tail to swim.

Alan

Replied by stretnik (stretnik) on topic Re: Apisto question....
This is just a quick reply, if you can check the other stock where he was housed, a Bacterial cause could be at the root of the problem, if the others in the original Aquarium show the same symptoms, bring the pair back and dose for Bacteria.

Also check for White spot.

Kev.

No signs of white spot or any visable signs of other diseases. He is still active just hiding away, could be internal.

Has been eatin well over the last few days though...

agree with kev, velvet is also a possibility and hard to detect. its unlikely to be internal parasites but check for stringy or bloodied faeces. its a process of ellimination and the most likely cause is velvet/whitespot, so check fish with magnifying glass and if no evidence is found then treat for a mild bacterial infection. as a precaution, i always treat newly acquired fish with melafix which is a mild bactericide.
every new fish added to a tank is a time bomb and should really be quarantined for a few days.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

Ive done all usual checks and no signs of anything. Thats why im so confused by it all other fish are, wouldnt do any harm to use melafix.

Ill keep you updated if anything changes cheers lads
