Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

i presume your taking about the dark coloured one, if so your right it is a severum, lovely fish but plant eaters, from the pic i cant tell wether its the common severum or rotkiel severum, either way nice fish

cheers mate, i had no idea they were plant eaters, none of the sites i looked at said anything about that?
what size do they generally reach in the aquarium? some places say 12" while others say 7-8", lots of conflicting info. don't want to buy them until i find out a bit more about them. have you personal experience keeping these?

cheers, wayne

Hi Wayne

Ya i keep em i have a group of rotkiel juvies about 6-7" atm they can get to 12" in ideal conditions and fed properly, lovely fish generally peaceful but rogue fish are always a possiblilty and i generally wouldn't recommend keeping them with fish that will fit in their mouths as they will disappear, generally unfussy eaters but like some deshelled peas and the occasional bloodworm or eartworm as a treat, can be very fiesty when breeding , what size thank are you thinking of putting them in as these guys need space?

hey mate, eh well i'll have a rio 180 free in the next few weeks which i was going to use. i'm thinking of keeping just 2 and move them on when they outgrow the tank? the ones in the shop are only about 2" at the min so i reckon i'd get about a year before i have to move them on? nothing is set in stone so if it's not feasable i can still scrap the idea!!

cheers, wayne

They like Anubias and java moss (so I discovered).

I would say its efasciatus which can grow to 12" thats your greens and hybrid golds and reds.
Heros sp rotkiel grow to 8" and only have 8 vertical bars unlike other heros.
You then have heros severus that are mouthbrooders that grow to 8" and your heros notatus 12".
Heros spurius I believe are almost unheard of in the hobby. You then have all the regional variants of the efasciatus.

Severums are renowned for eating plants but its something we have never had a problem with, we always have ours in planted tanks.

As sheag35 says if it fits in their mouth they'll eat it
