Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

2 Female Convicts nesting?

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to fishkeeping, wonder can you help please?

I have 6 x Convicts and 1 x Bristlenose Pleco in 100l tank - all very young, only 5cms long approx.

They're my first fish, I've only had them a couple weeks, all are well and they've started preparing to spawn.
Tensions are high as the 1 alpha (biggest, darkest) male, and 2 most colourful females chase the 3 smaller fish out of their way.

The Male has dug out a pit under some stones and is guarding it from everybody.

The 2 x colourful Females are at the other end of the tank, swimming together and digging out a pit together, both taking turns to mimic spawning (no eggs yet that I can see).
The two of them also swim together and attack the male in a repetitive back and forth fashion, that the male also mirrors. His attention is on the larger female however. The smaller seems only there for 'backup'?

Now here are my questions -
1) Could the 2 that I thought were 2 x Females, actually be a Male and Female?
Even though their colours both suggest female (see pics).
2) Or do Female Convicts tend to nest together?

3) Will all this aggression calm down after spawning?
The smallest Convict of the group is taking a bit of a beating, losing fins. I wouldn't like to see them kill eachother, and may have to see about reducing tank to single sex.

I've been trying to read up on the internet, but not finding much info.

Thanks for your time, hope you can help! :)

Females have the orange on their bellies, they are competeing for the male. When one of them spawns with the male, agression will mutiply above and beyond, they are one of the most protective fish around and pound for pound one of the most agressive. Any of the forums that cover convicts usually say just add water they will spawn, i reckon they would spawn in a puddle of mud. So aslong as you have a female/male tank your gonna have agression. If your going single sex the female's colours are nicer but the male is a bigger fish by a good bit.

Ive had two females rear fry. I think one tended to have the odd bite though ( didnt see her spit it back out)
Ive also seen several females (sisters) gang up on another smaller pair to eat the young.
A 100litre tank is too small. Only one pair could live in it.
