Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Goin away for 14 nights. Family member staying at home to mind my madra and feed my fishies, she struggles to lift the lid without squirmin,(dirty slimy things). Anyway i do a 30litre water change every 2 days then a more substanial every 8th. Will they be ok for the duration. They are in pristine condition at the min growing at an alarming rate eating almost everything i throw at them(not mad about cheesecake). Will they be ok for the duration is there anything i can do before i go i was thinking about taking out 100 litre(ish) and getting her to add water every couple o days. I dont add anything to water anyway, hoping they will be ok.

I know they are 'messy' eaters and the like so I'd just feed em two to three times in the two weeks you're away. They'll be perfect! Think we've all had same thoughts but I've gone down the auto feeder route and it didn't pan out too well - even though it was aerated, food still got clumpy, a blue bottle in the house must have got at it as had maggots in the food!! Said I'd never do that again so I used feeding blocks - lost my most beautiful of discus and a host of other fish, was like a massacre!! Ever since, I just give the tank a really good clean and water change, feed em just before I go and all is perfect when I get back. Get a friend to drop in and feed em a few times but nothing too much. I'm convinced this is the safest option at this point, for me anyway.....

John, they'll be fine.
What you ought to do is do the water change the day before your departure and make up 14 sachets of food (about half of what you would normally feed them in each).
Then your friend can just open up and give them the contents of one sachet each day.
They won't starve but will be pleased to see you on your return.
Give her your log-in details for the Forum just in case of something going wrong (heater or filter failure) then you can go away safe in the knowledge that if something did fail someone local could step in and rescue the situation for you.
But do be sure to tell her not to overfeed them Oscars - as you might have noticed - are prodigious eaters (and most of what goes in comes out the other end) so it really is best, in the absence of being able to do the regular water changes, to under-rather than over-feed them while you're away.
