Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have a 40 gal tank(167 litres) 103 cm long I enclosed a picture of my tank at present below ... there is more drift wood to be added to the left side which will kind of close off the end, breaking eye-line from the other areas much like the rocks do on the right side giving around 4 inches of space at either end...I'm looking to get four rams male and female 2 of each ... I understand they prefer to pick their own mate so like a 1 to 3 ratio until they pair off an return the unlucky girls who are not chosen, but im not looking to breed or raise fry don't have the space or the equipment...should i only get females ??? no breeding reducing the aggression between everyone....i have cory cats which i really like an black phantom tetra's which i would like to keep would that be ok...i realise its a lot to ask and most likely not laid out perfectly but any response is welcome also would a pleco fit in with the rams they never seem to notice territory and just wonder where they like :)

Hi Arron,

nice set-up, breaking the eye-line in the middle of the tank is a good idea if you end up with 2 pairs of rams. The best option for the rams if you don’t want them to breed is to get only males. Personally, I would suggest only 2 or 3 and providing a few more hiding places for them. With the males, you will get more colourful fish and they will display to each other in little territorial disputes. If they have enough places to hide, they will only square up to each other and the more dominant fish will hold its ground, typically the other will back off without much more than a colourful display.

Cheers,

Bill.

1,I have a 40 gal tank(167 litres) 103 cm long (picture enclosed).

2,adding more drift wood to the left side which will close off the end, keeping 4 or so inches private at either end

3,preferably 4 rams...male, female 2 of each ... I read they prefer to pick their own mate (only pairing up to reduce aggression) so 1 to 3 ratio until they pair off an return the un-chosen, not looking to breed or raise fry. should i only get females ??? no breeding reducing the aggression between everyone.

4,I have cory cats and black phantom tetra's which i would like to keep would that be ok ?

5,would a pleco fit in with the rams.

...i realise its a lot to ask and most likely not laid out perfectly but any response is welcome.
sorry if my information is a little off i get a little misled sometimes by reading contradicting advice scattered around the web so i usually end up on here asking someone to confirm or deny it

thank you all

Arron
