Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

At the moment they are just a little smaller/slender than adult Rams and look similar in body shape but don't act like Rams.
They Could be a young Geophagus and are very like Geophagus taeniopareius except they have rounded not pointed fins. Also they lack the golden yellow color.
They don't sift through the sand like Geophagus but do behave like young Geo's.
They can put on stress bars like a camouflage running vertically along the body. When they relax the iridescent horizontal stripes have a blue/green color and are quite bright.
When they were acclimated and introduced in to the tank (today) one of them took a dive right down in to some deep sand. Only the eyes and the top half of the body was exposed.
There doesn't seem to be any obvious sexual dimorphism.
They could be young or half gown. I just don't know.

Hopefully someone here recognizes them or can point me towards similar fish as a starting point to ID them.
Darren.

I am wondering if you have juvenile Biotodoma cupido there?
Other than this my suggestion would be to try the British Cichlid Association website (unfortunately I've let my membership of that site lapse, but it would be a simple job to join up) and post your pictures there - someone will know, I'm sure.
I have seen these fish for sale before, but for the life of me cannot remember - Cupido was the first name which came to mind, but I'm growing evermore uncertain now..
Good luck with your quest.

Yes I picked them up in seahorse but they are not on the list. They came in instead of something else.
They are similar to but not the same as Biotodoma cupido.
That photo looks spot on Jim. Are you sure you were not around my place taking photos.
The link just shows a photo. Any name to go with it? Or are you teasing me with clues..

The males are just starting to show the fin extensions and the colours are starting to pop.
If I can get a decent picture I will post it.

These are still young/small and the colours are only starting to show.
My photos don't do them justice.
Acarichthys heckelii with Cory to show size.

Two females.

Male.

I would say it will be a few months yet before they show there true colours.
