Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Howya, i had/have SA for years done numerous different set ups, even tried planted(massive no no with big O's). I moved on alot of Severums and JD's picked up some Geophagus Braziliensis(pearl cichlid) 1 male 4 Females, a super little fish that will get big, they turn the sand all the time worth thinking about if your not fully sure on your stock, i have them in with 2 Oscars 8 Red hooks. All are happy.

Plenty of hiding places, nice soft low ph water
bog wood or roots work well and help lower ph a little.

plenty of water turnover and good filtration is a must imo

get it done! You will Love them!!!!

Silver aros are about 50euro each as babys. Dont buy the first one you see as ive seen huge variation inbaby aros even in same tanks. It will take them 3 to 4yrs to reach over 2foot.

nice work, what did you do with the lights, they seem really subdued? not knocking it though, I like the effect

I wouldn't rush into getting a silver aro! I had 1 in with a salvini before and it was picked on so ended up with drop eye, I know they are prone to drop eye but it can be inevitable if put in with some boisterous cichlids, it had to keep an eye on where the salvini was even though they were only together for a week or 2. Its the same for feeding too, always surface feed an aro or it'll get drop eye for sure.... oh and make sure the lid is heavy and tight ;)

Nice setup btw :)

Below tank is for sale

i just used a t8 over a 6mm sheet of perspex there is also a blue led
the light is poor but i was told these cichlids like low light they seem more comfortable with this light when they were in the quarintine tank the bright light has them scared.

Dave this is only a 4ft 350L i would love a young arowana and maybe up grade to a bigger tank in the future is drop eye common? can it be cured. Where are knife fish from can they be got in a large size
