Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

i have a 8 inch oscar in a tank with a large frontosa and a large blue crayfish (rip), the last few days the crayfish was moving around the tank, it used to stay in its hiding place only venturing out when food was in the tank, the crayfish would always have its pinchers at the ready and pinch the oscar or frontosa if they came close, today the oscar went proper beserk and basically attempted to eat it, killing the crayfish but not bothering eating it, did the oscar just have enough of do u reckon it decided the crayfish looked delicious. i completely underestimated the predator that the oscar is.

I've had Oscars which have cowered away from everything, only to have them suddenly 'flip' in temperament and become the most dominant fish in the tank! I'm not too certain that this isn't a 'Cichlid Thing' as it often happens where Cichlids (especially South Americans) are totally submissive then 'turn' overnight.

I've given this example before, but I once had a pair of Oscars in a tank with a pair of Jewel Cichlids. The latter spawned and then kept their much larger and stronger tankmates hemmed up in a corner of the tank...until one morning I went out to feed the fish and, you've guessed, all the fry were eaten and the one of adult Jewels had suffered the same fate, the other was very dead too...submission time was over!

Perhaps your fish just 'flipped' too.

Hey there,

I keep two 5 and a half inch tiger oscars with a 5 inch green terror and a full grown male convict who is just under 5 inches too. These guys are in a 400 liter and up until recently the convict was the boss. After noticing missing scales on some of the fish, which happens when you mix cichlids of that nature I decided to put some time into observing what was going on. The convict was harassing the hell out of the smaller of the two oscars until he (the smaller of the two oscars) flipped and kicked the sh*t out of him. Then, seeing his chance, the male terror attcacked the injured convict and after a brief scuffle the larger of the two oscars swam over and broke up the fight. The convict is now back to full health but is now at the bottom of the tank pecking order. My point is, most big S/A cichlids have their own personalities and will only take so much crap from one another before going nuts for a bit. Your big guy probably had enough of being pinched and as a result, tore apart what would normally be prey for him. Anyhow, good luck with him and post pics if possible :)
