Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi I set up my tank four weeks ago and I put in:

3 minnows,
1 fantail,
1 shubunkin and
1 pleco.

The pleco is very young only about 2 and a half inches long everything has been fine so far. On saturday I got a black moore and immediately the pleco started chasing the black moore and ONLY the black moore. I've been feeding the pleco the pleco discs, carrot (not eating much of that) and bloodworms. Yesterday the pleco was sucking onto the black moore. Will I have to get rid of the pleco. My tank is around 45litres (20"long,10"wide and 7"high) thanks for any help.

plecos arent really a cold water fish so shouldnt really be in a tank with those species, plus they are known for latching onto slow moving fish so i would say get rid of it, go for the japanese weather loach or hill stream loaches instead snails also do a good job if algae is a problem

Hi welcome to the forum. Unfortunatly you will have to bring back the pleco in my opinion. Plecos are often sold as coldwater fish and a solution as an algae eater. They are actually tropical but can survive in sub tropical temperatures but it isent ideal. Plecos are also known to develop a taste for the slime coat on fish and latch onto them as you have described with your black moore. The last thing is that your tank may be over stocked causing it's aggression, 45 l is very small for 3 goldfish and a pleco. Getting rid of the pleco would be a start as they can get quite big best of luck with the problem.

Welcome aboard. The pleco must go and the shubunkin. Me da has a shubunkin in his pond at about 10 inches and he is only about 2 year old or so. They grow to a foot and bigger if u feed them well.

cripes mick, i'd love to see a picture of that shubunkin :) are you sure hes not a koi on steroids?

@lindsay, would agree with all the above posts, the moors nice smooth matt skin would be very attractive to any of the suckermouths. would also stick to a good flake food and avoid bloodworm or carrots.

Thanks for all the replies. I have returned the pleco to the pet shop. I didn't want to but had to. The pet shop said they had never heard of this before but a simple check on the net will prove this otherwise. Wish i'd been told bout that before I bought him.
