Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

well i just have had the most pleasant suprise in my fish house, i was out today constructing a centralised air system for the fish house when out of the corner of my eye i spotted something moving, for the last 8 months i had been trying to spawn my L66 with no success  and today i spotted some 1.5cm fry, all i saw was about 5 fry initally all without egg sacs and grubbing about the tank, then no more than half an hour ago armed with a torch i returned to see if i can see any more, and yes the count is now up to 11, due to the large amounts of plants i can see anymore, but what a start i'm bloody delighted, :woohoo:  :P they must have hatched approximately a week and a half ago i reckon... the only difference to what i have done is to recently start doing my water changes with rainwater.. have to get the camera out tomorrow and try to get some shots

believe me ceech i had tried everything from using ro water to simulating rain fall, to drought then flood with the tank and then when i planted the tank and used rainwater things just seemed to fall into place they got more active where out a lot more and then with work etc to be honest i didnt have time to put into breeding them but thats when it worked, started using rain water treated with easylife neo and fed them thats all, ok the water is very soft now and lots of plant life but other than feed and do water changes i did nothing but i now have fry, they seem to hide during the day and are all over the place at night so will try at dusk to take a few pics if i ever find the the better half put the camera "for safe keeping"

Excellent news. Well done. I too have a group of L66's (sub adult) so I'll be waiting a bit yet. It's a wonderful feeling alright when you get an unexpected surprise like that. You'd imagine that the softer water had an effect but you say you were using R.O. previously so who knows. Lost count of the times when people have tried endless ways to try to "encourage" a spawn only to give up in the end and let them be.......... And then it happens. Could be the start of something beautiful..........

Pa

P.S. Maybe the secret is in the special Limerick rainwater. The wife's from there so I'll have to arrange a shipment to try it out

Great news Seamus,
It seems (and I can vouch for this from [very] personal experience) that our fish, but very especially our Plecos, don't read the same Fora as do we - and so are not aware of the effort we all put into getting them to reproduce!!!
Perhaps we should send them to Specsavers and leave written messages for them to follow...

Well done.

John

just collecting it with a water butt connected to a down pipe from a new set of gutters i put up, then filtered with carbon and easylife added before placing in the tank i never bothered to heat it up as rain aint warm.... it seemed to work ;)

working out great Kopidol, it differs from water from the tap by being neutral ph, hardly any hardness and it has no chemicals in it, i filter it through carbon just to get any impurities from the air out of it and treat it with easylife to be 100% safe to use (as it takes out loads of nasties) plus by mixing it with remineralising agents like you would ro water you can maipulate it to whatever quality you want.. amazon/tanganyikan etc
