Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,

My father has a group sold as L180 Ancistruses.

They have now started to "bristle up" and knowing that females of many of these type of Ancistruses get bristles too just less of them I'm still hopefull that there is a female in there. Does anyone have experience with this species?

Three are obvious males, here's one of them:

The potential female looks like this:

What do you guys think, is the second a male of female? They are still on the young end so it's a bit of a guess(wishfull).

Thanks in advance!

It has been a year since I created this thread, today I had to take out these beauties for their own safety due to rearranging the tank and took the oportunity to take some snaps.

It turns out that Chris (Draco) and my own instincts were right that the potential girl was a girl:), I was however wrong about one of the males which is good but unfortunately it also seems that we have lost one male unless it was hiding really well today(this turned out to be wrong, only had three from the start, no wonder i only found three).

I thought I would update the post incase it could come in useful to someone else.

The females one year later:

This is the male today:

I think they are looking well and hopefully there will be some young ones on the way next year.

Those Ancistrus are beauties Mel

The male has some nice Bristles, will those get knarley with age like some of the other ancistrus, branching off ect or will this fellow keep those nice neat ones?

@Mark: Cheers Mark, yeah I think they look really nice myself.

I have not found many pictures of mature fish on the net and as this male is just about a year and a half I don’t really know how they will look when truly mature. I’m kind of curious myself.

I’ll try to get some updated photos in a year again.
