Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

You hit the nail on the head- the price of a pleco is largely dependent on where it's from and how easy for an LFS to get stocks, and by ill fortune (although maybe not for the fish!) some of the nicest happen to be in the most inaccessible (geography or politics) places, or have trading bans on them. My favourites are skoby ancistrus and golden nuggets, but you rarely find them at a price that will give you change from fifty notes.
However, in saying all that, the plecs I have longest and the most active in my tanks are my Bristlenoses that I picked up at about .5cm. Against a light backgound they have surprisingly good patterning (albeit all shades of grey!).
Sorry I couldn't be more use, but there are loads of catfish enthusiasts on here. Let us know what you finally decide.

The fancier plecos are not cheap unless you can get them when very young.
I have 2 albino bristlenoses (male and female) They are great algae eaters and keep my plants and bog wood clean. I got them in Seahorse recently.
I also have 1 Golden nugget (getting big now). it hides away alot but comes out during feeding.

I am looking to get a young Royal pleco next.

If you put a cut of cucumber in the tank they will flock around it.

Hi,

There are many nice plec's out there.

It could be an idea to narrow it down by looking at what tank they will go into, size of tank, temperature and maybe pH.

Another thing is supply, even pleco's that are supposed to be quite cheap can be hard to find so it's a good idea to have a few alternatives to look out for when the LFS's post their lists. For this reason I would by a group straight away if at all, otherwise it can take a long while until the same species appear again.
