Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hey Guys,

Was just wondering has anyone else kept or is keeping a spotted raphael catfish? I have had one for I believe just over a year now and he is about 3 inches long. They are a beautiful looking fish I think.

Anyway my question really is if you have kept them is there any "tricks" you have used to get them to come out on show? I only ever see mine if I rearrange the tank or lift up the ship ornament he has inhabited. My girlfriend says she has seen him out in the tank at night but I have never actually witnessed that myself. I really want to get him out on show a bit more if at all possible!

Havent seen these for yesrs, had one on a comunity tank donkeys years back, well actually my brother did :) They can be tempted into the open with worms. If you know where its hiding and drop a worm on close by, there is a good chance it will give an appearance.

funnily enough i find with shy fish the more cover you give them the more on show they are as if they get spooked they know they have safe refuge nearby, so add more areas of cover for them it should work

I have two of these for the last few years, I picked them up from another fishkeeper who was breaking down his tank as he was moving away, he had them for quite a while before i got them, they have grown slowly but steadily since i then, I would guess that they are both passed the five inch mark now, they only ever make an appearance if they are very hungary during daylight hours, and i mean very hungary!
the only time i see them is if i drop in some food near the areas the hide in just at lights out, out they come and they suck up the food like a vacume cleaner, each fish would down about a teaspoon of tetra prima in one feed! they stuff themselves in one feeding, you would think that their stomach would burst! then off the go back to hide again. not to be seen again for another month or so

The spotted one is around five inches and the same only see him once in a while in day when very hungry Birchers afraid of him when he's hungry it's like a feeding frenzy.the three stripped ones are about two inches each don't have them that long but they more active .I'd recommend lots of hiding spaces as they move between them.and see them more often. If not enough spaces they tend to stay in the one till late evening or feeding time.
