Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Day 2 since they spawned. A first for me. Anyone spawned these before?

Cheers lads. They're in with my juvenile discus so im guessing the masses of high protein food and daily water changes had triggered them. Ive removed the spawn with the male to give them a fighting chance if they do hatch.

Congratulations.

I haven't spawned these before but I have spawned other whiptails.
Unfortunately none of mine ever used the tubes and opted to use the walls of the tank.
The males would either give up and leave the eggs or knock them all over the tank whilst vigorously fanning them.
This would mean I would have to artificially raise them. Nightmare.
The eggs would fungus most of the time. Using an egg tumbler doesn't work. Met blue or Aquaflavin wont work. The dose needed to kill the fungus also kills the young.
I made up all sorts of contraptions to try solve this problem with limited success hatching.

If you end up hatching them yourself there is one thing you will have to watch out for. At the time of hatching the young can get stuck in the egg. They will get out but a lot of them will be damaged. You wont notice the damage caused for several months.
If they have trouble hatching they can damage the body (between the dorsal and tail), it will end up bent and the older they get the worse it gets.
The same can happen the pectoral fins.

To solve this problem you need to pop them like popping a pea from a pod. Just give them a squeeze.

Here is an old video of some whiptails trapped in the eggs.

Hopefully you wont have this problem.
Good luck with them.

Darren

that's very interesting Darren, the bent body with raised tail is something I just noticed recently with spawns of L66, 3 out of a total of 60+ had this problem. having said that I had not seen this defect before in spawns of different whiptails, farlowella and other loricarids.
the problem with some of these species is any defect goes unnoticed for ages as they tend to be secretive. I found some species of whips, farlowella etc. were less shy and swarmed on the glass sides so it was probably easier to see any defect earlier, whereas the hypancistris and other species are impossible to track as they rarely show in quiet breeding set ups.
ps I love to read darrens comments on any subject(but esp. catfish) as he is so thorough in his research and there are great tips to be gleaned.
pps very nice ricko, keep us up to date on the progress.

Derek, I echo your observations on Darren's contributions, not only are they very informative they're totally original - not 'copy-and-paste' jobs taken from other articles and/or fora.

More requested Darren - and from Derek.

Really good read and much appreciated information. Unfortunately the first spawn was a no goer. Eggs were notviable. Luckily they have spawned again so I will just leave them to it and see what happens.

That's great news Jamie.

Any tips or pitfalls to watch out for?
What are you feeding them?

Thanks for the update. I was wondering how you were getting on with them.
