Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

He looks pretty chunky, how big is he currently?
Also, do be very careful if you have to handle him, one of mine tagged me a while back and cut my finger to shreds. Felt like someone trying to cut my finger off with scissors. Ouch..

Fab fish, even if they are mean.

Id say roughly 6 to 7 inches, thought he was fully grown  he's always out looking for food, loves tetra prima, won't touch nls, and he gets some cut up shrimp from time to time.

I havent had to handle him as of yet, if my green terror comes too close the catfish will whip its body at him, that would prob be a defensive thing? I only have him about a month id say, was hoping to hold onto him but think he would out grow my 4ft tank

Wow are they really that sharp??? What size tank are yours in?

They are that sharp.. They are really powerful and will try catch your finger between their pectoral and the scutes on their sides.
Mine are in a 700 litre tank at the mo

A Raphael cat would be very similar and stay small if you're looking for a replacement once he outgrows your tank

Who ever told you it will grow to 6inchs had no idea what they were looking at. In time they can get over 2ft but like 2poc said they grow very slowly..they need bog wood and a meaty diet like sinking cat fish pellets.

I've never seen one in the local shops so I dont know their value. He will do fine in a 4ft tank for a long time, I've a 9ft tank with a good range of catfishs including stripped and spotted raphaels.

That size in the shops would be 30-40 euro.
If I were buying it on the forum I would expect to pay 20 euro. Keep it for as long as you can - super fish.
Paulv I think both seahorse and Artane have small ones in stock at the moment.

Trouble with me buying small young fish now is my big cats will just eat them, so I need to get a young adult fish atleast 10inchs plus.someday some member will want to rehome one. ;) ;)
If any one will stock them its ian in aquatic village, its his kinda fish. Also fin try to include some veggy food for him not just meaty foods.
