Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Any ideas on what this species is? Its about 6 inches long and is probably full grown as its at least 5 years old.

This is a confusing one. My guess is the polka dot pleco Acanthicus adonis. Your fish is a jovenile. From what im reading the polka dot reachs 3ft in time. As yours is already 5 years old and only 6 inchs im thinking maybe snowball pleco L142. Maybe others can offer an opion.

I was thinking along those lines as well but a five-year-old fish would be considerably larger than 6" - plus it has no caudal extensions either.

I consulted Daragh Owens about it and he's of the same opinion too.

Nice fish all the same Derek.

John

Edit: Upon thinking further this could possibly be a Vampire Pleco - Leporacanthicus Galaxias. They used to be L-029 but I think they have been given a different L-number now. It still creates a mystery why at five years of age it's only six inches long.

Ive done some looking on planet catfish and ruled out the stary night bristle nose L183, does not match the galaxy L029 either. How sure are you that its 5 years old? Im still thinking polka dot pleco and maybe its much younger than you believe.

Hi Derek, I have one of these fellas for about 2 years, about the same size, he/she sold to me as a L240 from Gavin at FFF - now Artane aquatics.

Beautiful fish, any ideas if yours is a male or female ? I've never seen one in the shops since buying mine.

Thanks for the pointers lads. The 240 galaxy would be my guess too. This fish was formerly owned by Mick (arabesque) and he had it for at least 3 years and I have him for about 2 and it has not grown noticeably while with me. I must check with mick and check out the history and origin.
This is another video which may show him better.

mike. I have always thought of it as male but I'm not sure and as I only ever really saw this one had nothing to compare against. Will make a point of finding out now though. Have you any pics or vids of your individual for comparision?

hi all

have 2 of these, have found it near inpossible to sex. would love to breed them but have found it near inposible to locate more in any IFS shops, very placide ,also known as vampire plec's as they have 2 fang teeth in mouth, are known to devour any dead fish that fall to bottom of tank .
