Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'm pretty sure this is an L18/L81 (open to correction), but not sure what gender he/she is. I would love to get the other half, play some Barry White and see if they can make some sweet sweet.... fry. I have done some research on the net, but very hard to gender any of the Golden Nugget plecos. Does anyone have the experience to tell from these photots whether he is really a she?
Also, these photos are all of the same fish, but taken over a year apart. The fish is in my tank over two years, but that's the best age I can give.
Thanks, LoB.

Great looking pleco Xaribdis.

All the Plecos that go under the golden nugget name (Baryancistrus xanthellus) are hard to sex.
I wouldn't try sex anything under 8". After that I would look at the odontodes and behavior.

The odontodes can appear longer on males when in good condition and they may only show this for a spell throughout the year before shedding the longer cheek hairs.
The males of most plecos will be more dominant and/or aggressive.

There are a couple of things that needs to be considered when anyone is keeping or plans to some day keep Baryancistrus xanthellus.

They have one of the longest intestines for digesting food out of all the plecos.
They will find it very hard to digest meaty foods. Keep the diet vegetable based.

Smaller fish are found in the shallows with temperatures going over 30c a lot of the time.
Larger fish go to deeper water where the temperature is still quite high.
So keep them warm in well oxygenated water. I would keep the temperature above 27c.

Like a lot of plecos they are prone to bacterial infections.
Keep the base of the tank clean at all times.

Xaribdis what size is the one you have?

Thanks Darren,

He/She is about 6'' now, but extremely slow growing- was already 3'' when I got him out with you lads in Seahorse.

I have him in a 5ft tank, at 29C, with plenty of driftwood and veggies. They can put away a serious amount of cucumber. And then destroy the bottom of the tank with it! It gets a full substrate hoover once a week.

I read how aggressive males can be to one another, so was hoping to sex this individual so I could keep my eyes out for a potential mate at some point in the future.

Thanks for the reply,

LoB.

3" in 2 years is not bad growth.
Ii have read that if plecos are kept in wrong conditions they grow very slowly, if at all.
So it looks like you are doing something right.

When this one is big enough to sex you may find it hard to get one of a similar size.
It might be better to just get one now and hope for the best. You have a 50/50 chance.
If they end up being the same sex you can try trade it with someone else that has a decent sized one.
Most people only buy one of these and don't think of trying to breed them.
