Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

While I was on my holidays a lot happened in my tank.Firstly my pair of jewels became a breeding pair and the female spawned. My very peaceful tank became a warzone so I'm told by their minder. When I got back the tank was a state, the glass was covered in green algae from overfeeding i presume. There is a lot a lot of lumps gone out of fins and what was about 50 fry (I'm told) was down to 6.I have separated the jewels to another small tank as she looks like she may go again, but my pair of rainbow cichlids dont seem to be recovering. The larger one had a chunk out of his side and the smaller one looked a nervous wreck and looked like it got skinny.I have n't been able to get them to eat since I came home.I came home from work today and the little one is just dead and being nipped by severums,I have him floating in a net but I think he's a goner there is lumps taken out of him.The bigger one just sits in the same position and although his wound appears to be healing I think he may be gone next. Now before I went on holiday these two were very lively and well able to stand up for themselves so I'm very disappointed they are lovely fish.So my question is if this happens do you see will they make it or put them out of their misery????

It sounds like the damage is too far gone - but I still think you need to give them their chance at life, in fact you really owe it to them, after all you brought them to your home.
They are quite sturdy fish but even non-breeding Jewels can be more than a match for most fish - ones with eggs/fry are very 'parental'.
I have written this before but here it comes again (groan...), I once had a pair of Jewels in a large tank also containing a pair of fully-grown Oscars which firmly kept the Jewels in their rightful place - until the Jewels spawned! Then the tables were turned, especially once the fry were free-swimming. It was almost alien to see two fully-grown Oscars huddled into one corner with the Jewels and fry 'lording it' over 95% of the available space.
It stayed like this for a while, but eventually the Oscars had enough...I went to feed them one morning and all fry were gone and both Jewels were ex-fish!

So, although it didn't finish with a happy ending it does illustrate just how aggressively they will protect their young.

But, back to the Rainbows - give them their shot at pulling through (cue Derek) - but don't be too disappointed if they get worse rather than better.
