Supressing Red Tail or Rainbow Shark aggression!
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

If I bought either a Red Tail or Rainbow Shark at a very young age (small size) and introduced it as the last inhabitant in a 180 litre tank (lots of bogwood and plants) would this help suppress its agression and teritorial issues...Tank mates would be SAEs,Tiger Barbs,Kribs,Ancistrus
Also is there any truth in the rumour that Albino Rainbow Sharks are more placid than the normal ones?

I'm not certain what a Rainbow Shark is, but the Red Tail can be a real demon, but not always.
My suggestion, for what it's worth, would be to buy one (and only one) the smaller the better as long as looking bright and alert, not a lethargic specimen 'skulking' and hiding from the dominant ones in the shop tank (but not one of those either).
Bring it home and let it settle into its new home but keep a watchful eye on it.
At some time in the future it may start to become aggressive - but most of your fish are pretty mobile ones (apart from the Kribs so watch carefully how they go - they may just return the aggression) so this should be fairly unimportant.
At some point in the future you might have to remove the Shark if it gets too bad, but return it for another smaller one and start the cycle all over again.
Any more suggestions?

Like John mentioned, just get the one RTBS. I believe the same goes for the Rainbow too. Providing the RTBS a cave to call its own will help and it will defend that site from percieved invaders, hopefully instead of trying to dominate the entire tank. Great fish and stunning too, good luck with it.

I agree with what john said but i also think that your tank is not big enough for a red tail shark. When fully grow they can be 6 inches or 15 cm !!! and as too agression its really depends some are quite and some are very grumpy. Also the rainbow shark will grow to 6 or 7 inches and can be highly agressive !!! i supose there is no harm in trying but understand they will out grow you tank ! I think your kribs would be ok they are tough fish i used to breed them like rabbits. They can be very agressive them selves when breeding. I have heard of males wiping out entire tanks. The tiger barbs will be good they are fast and have attitude.

If you give it a cave as suggested to call it's own. I would place it in one of the corners of the tank.
I beleave when fish set up a teratory for themselfs they do it in a radious.
By placing it's home in a corner of a tank most of the teratory is outside the tank. Only leaving a small area of the tank for it to protect and claim as it's own.
I would place a cave for the pleco down the other end of the tank.
If it becomes agressive i would feed it very lightly.
Food = energy = fuel for agression.
Darren.
