Ok for stocking a 120litre?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi everyone,
This is my idea for stocking my 120litre tank. L80cm x D43cm x H55cm
7 Glowlight tetras
10 Rummynose tetras
1m+2f Apisto Cacatuoides
1m+2f Bolivian Rams
1m+1f Keyhole Cichlid
The tank has plenty of plant cover and I'm working a way to put in some caves.
What do you think? Will they all get along? Will it be overstocked?
Thanks,
George

Chris, would you recommend anything else besides the Bolivians?
And Craig, I might get a gang of 5 panda corys, you reckon I'd be overstocked then?
Thanks,
George

Alright George, how is the tank? Has it cleared up? How are the fish looking? and what are your water readings?......As you know, the 17 fish you have in there is more than enough for a 2 week old tank so you have a few more weeks to look (not buy) at different fish so take your time and read up on the hobby as much as you can!!...Patience is a virtue!!

Hey Ger,
The tank didn't clear up after 3 days so I actually tore it down and started from scratch. I removed all the sand (which in retrospect was layered far too much) and went with soil over a layer of gravel (which incidentally is quartz gravel so I think it might be ok for the corys?)
So right now all the fish I had in the tank (the 5 glowlights and 8 rummys) are in my 25litre fluval chi along with my betta...it really isn't ideal so I've added filter squeezings, some gravel and plants from the chi into new tank hoping to speed up the cycle.
I won't be adding anymore fish for a good while dont worry, but its nice to look all the same

I'm surprised it didn't clear up in 3 days but its just one of them things!!
So whats going on now in the 120L? whats in it? is it just the bit of gravel from your 25L and a few plants or what?.....And if thats a male Betta, keep an eye on them rummynoses...can be nippy little gits sometimes but they should be grand!!

Ya I thought I saw a rummy eyeing up my male betta but they're all grand. I watched em for a few mins with the lights out just in case. I'll try do small water changes every 2nd day because they're all a little cramped in there. In the middle of exams at the moment so hopefully I stay on top of water changes.
In the 120 now I have a layer of organic compost, just under an inch, and capped by about an inch and a half of fine/medium quartz gravel. I have some elodea densa from the 25L put in but also have a bunch of other plants in there. 3 types of crypt - all green but 2 large, 2 medium and 4 small bunches. Then there is some wisteria and dwarf hairgrass (I'm pretty sure its dwarf hairgrass) and a small bit of mopani wood.
I'm looking to add another few small bits of mopani and combining them with small stones to make little caves for my eventual dwarf cichlids.
At the moment I have 30W of light from two 15W compact fluorescent bulbs but I'm hoping to upgrade to 70W soon - theres a place in Crumlin who have the lights I'm looking for...I'm just a little worried that the plastic hood might get a little melty...
I'll put up pics at some stage when its safe to add the fish.

Thanks Chris, I'll look into getting blue rams instead. We were talking about the lighting issue before and I think I'm going to take your advice and go for it. I'll be getting 2x35W bulbs giving me just over 2wpg so I should hopefully see some nice growth
