Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Ok I will be setting up and planting a rio 125 in the very near future and will be really looking forward to the fish side of things too, so far I have come up with a few ideas, but here is a rough guide of what it will look like, it will have scattered dragon stone, quite a bit of redmoor adding like a root effect from either side of the tank with a lawn in the middle

Just curious as to your guys ideas on what fish yous would reckon would look good? keeping in mind they must be small side and community friendly

heres my list of desired fish

dario-dario (though only a pair maybe as im aware males are aggressive
khuli loaches
shrimp (havent a clue what would be appropriate)
Pair of angels of gouramis, set on anegls but they may cause havoc later down the line and as for gouramis have no idea about most varieties and their temperament

anyone any opinions? would be interesting even to hear how other people set their communities up, particularly for planted setups

angels or gouramis will gobble shrimp. unless you get rock shrimp or bamboo shrip but both are filter feeders and have specific needs so research them. but, they are great shrimp to watch!

gourami's are thought to be peaceful enough, although a while back i seen some small ones hopping the crap out of each other in a pet shop. a 125l is a touch on the small side for angels, as the tank needs to be quite high as they can get near a foot tall or bigger depending on variety

If possible id like to try and get a pair of dwarf gouramis as they are small and will be roughly the same size as the other fish I plan on using, forgot about agalxy rasboras, lovely looking fish.

even though predatory would you reckon the likes of a dwarf gourami still cause problems for adult cherry shrimps for example?

yes most likely they would. the only fish i have not had problems keeping cherries with were cory sterbai, neons and copper rasbora but this was probably only because the shrimp were too big to eat, although once the fish were moved on the shrimp population exploded so they were without doubt eating any eggs

have a look at bamboo shrimp care, they are a wonderful shrimp to see i'd get more again if my archer fish wouldn't eat them!
