Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hip Hip Hurray, my 180 liter tank is cycled :woohoo:
Well, to be honest, the ammonia and nitrite readings are reading both 0 since the 10th of December :P but I just kept it going since then to make sure everything was stable. Now I spend the last week doing massive waterchanges as well to get the huge Nitrate readings back to were they should be.
I dont know how all those cycling-advice-websites can say 1 big waterchange is all it takes to get the Nitrates down  it took me like 4. But now its all set and ready to go ... whohoo :woohoo:

Anyway, enough japping  :silly:
I was thinking about what fish I would like for the tank. Since my bad experience with the last ones I bought, I am not going with the original stocking plan anymore. So here my revised plan.

10 Harlequin Rasboras (got to get Survivor some friends  )
6 Panda Corys (did I mention I changed to small rounded gravel so that I can have some B) )
6 Ottos (not getting them for another few months but want to keep room for them )

So, this is what I am pretty much set on.

But I would like another school of fish as well plus a nice "centerpiece" fish/fishes too. I would like something colourful and maybe slightly bigger. Preferably peaceful though as I dont like being referee all the time.
Ideas and suggestions would be very much appreciated, so fire away

My tank :
temp : 24 degree
liter : 180 (guess its closer to 150/160 with deco/gravel)
plants : live plants
substrate: 2-4mm rounded gravel
ammonia : 0
Nitrite : 0
Nitrate : 5
PH : 6.8
Filter : Fluval 205

Thank you :)

Thats an amazing display of patience Katie, especially since you've had those readings since the 10th!

Have you definitely made up your mind about having 2 schools of fish? Because it might look nicer to have a few more harlequins like 15-16 instead of 10 harlequins and 10 of something else? That way you could get in an extra centre piece fish in as well. In my tank I have rummy nose tetras and glowlight tetras, but now I wish that I had just gone for a larger number of rummys...But if you are set on having 2 shoals then I'd recommend the rummys.

Have you thought about dwarf cichlids for your centre piece? German Blue rams or gold rams? Saw my first electric blue rams the other day and they looked wicked!

Thanks for the input jwm :) Your tank sounds good.

George, hmmm, it wasnt patience .... it was a serious battle against myself lol
I went to the store this evening and spotted a German Blue Ram. It was the first time I really saw one ... wow. They really are stunning. But I also spotted some Powder Blue Dwarf Gouramis and I have to say they stole my heart too.

Is it possible to keep both fish types in a tank together ? If yes, what conditions would I need to produce for them.
I guess we are talking lots of shelter/caves/hiding spots/plant cover. But even with all that, could it work ?
Or if they couldnt co-exist, which fish would suit my current stocking idea best ?

(I realise that they need higher temperatures then the Harlequins. But I could set up a permanent home for them in one of the spare 60 liters though )
