Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

:( :(
lost all my clown loaches
its after taking me a few days before i could talk about it but it took me 4 years to get my gang of 36 clown loaches together.some were 7" big
all was well over the crimbo but within 3 days they were all gone.didnt put any new fish into the tank so it wasnt that.
can only put it down to a mate of mine was fishing on the beach and got a load of crabs when he was gettin bait and brought them up to me for the fish.gave them to the fish in the tank a few days apart with some shrimp and they happly ate them up.was gone for a few days over the christmas and when i got back it was to late.nearly got sick
all the other fish were grand which is strange it was only the loaches that died.no whitespot, nothing
have just about cleaned up the tank as some of the loaches were in bits and being ate by the other fish so done a few water changes and everything seams sorted
i normally feed them flake and bloodworm and never had a prob
do ye think by feeding them crab and shrimp fecked up the eco of the tank?
maybe they had some parasite on them
the big downside of fish keeping
dont think i can start collecting clown loaches again,it would cost alot of money to replace the ones i had :(

Oh ****, so sorry to hear that!

The only advice I can give, having had unfortunate events like that myself is to wait with deciding if you will get new ones or not. After something like that it's hard to think clear and I was almost ready to throw in the towel at one point but the will came back.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Jesus mossy that horrible news I remember seeing a picture of your tank with the clowns and you had some whoppers.. Really looked great..
Why is it where you go away for a day or two something always bloody happens :(

Listen mossy a few weeks down the line I bet you will be happy when your looking at something new in the tank... fresh start!

I'm lost for words Gav, sorry to hear that, I believe the Crabs caused it, they are partial filter feeders, who knows what they had eaten or what the Crabs had eaten, this should serve as an example to People using Sand, Rocks , Wood etc from Beaches, these are NOT safe places to get free stuff but in saying this, I am so sorry you had to experience this, they were cracking Fish... given this project of yours has been going on for such a long time and had been followed by so many people, if others are willing, I'd be willing to make a donation to help you try to re establish the colony, if this is unacceptable Valerie please say so, I understand the implications that it could cause. This is such a shame.

So so sorry to hear about this Mossy. I know you'd put an awful lot of care and effort into those fish, and they don't get to be up to 7 inches overnight!!!

Years ago when I lost my first group of Hypancistrus I swore that was me finished. I'd had enough.

I know it's easy for me to say now but time did help me come round somewhat and ultimately I got back on the horse, so to speak.

You've been good enough to help me out in the past and if all is pc with the mods I'm with Kev on this so if there's anything I can do to help I'd be more than willing.

Wow! That really sucks, I feel so sorry for you. :( If I lived closer to you I would donate some of my clown loach to you. Such a nice fish, probably my favourite in my tank. They have such individual personalities I just cant imagine how it feels to loose all of them like that. Best of luck to you!

You know you're addicted to fishkeeping when...you spend €200 to accomodate a €5 fish.

It's a horrible thing to happen. Twas the crab that caused it. Crab off a beach here are only short of glowing they eat anything and everything, but if someone else learns from this and can avoid such a disaster then it was the decent thing to document it. (i have 4 juvie loach you can take i can meet ya somewhere in a bit if ya want to start again)

Mossy,

Sorry to hear about your loss.
As a recent member of the forum I would not have know the background for your achievements with the clown loach.
I would love to see a video you may have posted in the past if it not too painful for you at this stage.

Best wishes with your future fish ventures.

Hi Mossy
Sorry to hear about the loss.
I am changing directions with my tank shortly. I only have the one clown but you are welcome to it. Its just over 4 inch and in good nick. I hope to be visiting my brother in Kilkenny in early feb so could meet you with it. Its yours if you want it.
