Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I recently put a large piece of bog wood into my tank, mainly as cover for the cat fish and the shrimp. But one of my male danio's has claimed it as his own and will not allow anyone near it.This include's the angles which are a hell of alot bigger.I didnt think danio's would display this kind of behaviour. Any idea's or advice on how to kerb behaviour would be welcome .

Thanks stuart.

He's a zebra danio, the smallest one there. Mybe its small fish syndrome, lol. But at this point he will even fight with the cat fish for their food pellets. Most of the fish in my tank are quite young and maybe the others just need to mature a bit to assert their dominance. But at the moment this little guy is upsetting the whole tank.Any idea's would be helpful.

Cheers stuart.

Usually the most effective solution is to add a few more, preferably males, this will spread out the aggresssion.

Adding more is not an option unfortunatly as im over stoced as it is. there are 5 of them there 2 male and 3 female from what i can tell but not 100% sure.Im hoping the rest will just man up (fish up) and put him back in his place. Fingers crossed.

Try putting another piece of Wood around the same size opposite the one he's defending, he'll find it very difficult to reign over both and you might lessen the aggression.

Cheers didnt think of that it is kinda the center piece of the tank , so there is not much else for anyone to claim.Ok will try and get some more wood next weekend, and see if that will sort him out.Any idea on when the might start breeding? As i said before they were all juvinile when i bought them and that was about 2 months ago now.

Cheers stuart.

Just keep feeding them good stuff, Frozen protein rich fare, Bloodworm, Whiteworm etc but mix this with good quality dried like Prima New Life Spectrum etc, they are scatterers so fine leaved Plants work a treat as does java Moss but these will devour Eggs so quickly it has to be seen to be believed as will they the Fry.

This is a story i'm glad i read Stuart,as i had a similar one many months ago, also with a Zebra Danio......I had 4 of them (2M 2F),and for the first 3/4 months all was normal, the 4 hung around together near the surface area and never ventured to the surface (maybe mid tank if there was food sitting on something but never the bottom)...then 1 day,1 of them for no apparent reason(nothing was changed in the tank) decided to swim at the bottom and only occasionally swam to the top.....thought he must have a problem but no,he was fine(if anything he got even more zippy down there) and when the cory's and plec were jumping all over each other for the pellets,he would be right in the mix to get a nibble.....now he never tried to claim a certain area for himself but he surprised me just how aggressive he could be and really looked after himself........this went on for about 3/4 weeks, then he suddenly decided to party up the top again(again, nothing changed in the tank) and all was as it was......spent hours on the net looking for similar story but zilch, until now.........Can yeh let us know if something similar happens as i still find it a bit bizzaar, and my 4 were moved on a good while ago, cheers

I have found over the years that when I get a aggressive dominant in the tank that the soloution is to put him in a pint glass (or the like) floating in the tank for two days, in jail as such! he can see the others and they can see him but it gives the others the time to build energy and confidence that he cannot attack, when released they are always a changed fish. (Pity it doesnt seem to work on humans).

Dont forget to feed and change water in his cell!

Forgive me for saying but would that not seriously stress out the fish?

It's not something I'd advocate.
