Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Tank mates for piranha

Would like a bit of help here, been doing alot of reading and watching alot of videos on youtube. Been seeing alot of piranha keepers also having neon tetras, black neons, danios and tiger barbs in with their piranha. So just wondering if any1 has kept piranha and has had success with keeping LIL mates? as it would really set off the tank when its finished. Been reading that when a piranha gets old enough and over a certain size that it will not bother with lil fish as the effort would be too much for such a lil snack, plus they know they are hand fed
i have a pleco in with my piranha since they were babies and they get along fine, he even swims at piranha head on if they annoy him, i know i can keep stingray with them but they pricey, missus said if i dont have 1 by xmas she will buy me one!!!!!! RESULT :P

hey Brazzill

I've heard of people keeping Exodon paradoxus (Bucktooth tetra) with piranha
they are themselves like little piranha, they frenzie feed aswell
cool fish but i do think that you'd be taking a chance no matter what go in with the piranha

Even if the companions were to survive for any length of Time, wouldn't they be existing in a constant state of fear and susequently stressed to Boot? In Nature, the Fish would have avenues of escape, but like a Man in a Field with a Bull, he will feel a lot less stressed than a Man in a Pen with the Bull.

Hi Brazzill, I've 7 large piranha's and have tried a good few tank mates but I have either taken them out again or they've ended up eaten. Neon tetra's were not too fast for them either!!!

Like Kev said, if they're not eaten straight away after a while they start to look bad from all the stress. This happened when i tried to mix oscars with them. I had them in there for about a month but had to take them out because they started to look wrecked from constantly being nervous.

In my experience, it's only a matter of time before all tank mates are eaten. A fish could be in there for a few months and be fine but the piranha can just take a notion and eat him.

There's one exception to this though in my case. I have a striped leporinus that has been in with them for around two years now and he's fine. They don't bother him at all for some reason. I also saw a few pics of a large public aquarium and they had piranha'a and striped leps mixed together so these seem to get on.

I've given up now trying to mix in tank mates. It's a balls getting attached to a fish that has been in there with them for a few months and then coming home from work finding him eaten.

I was trying to add tank mates because the piranha are boring enough and they have a big tank but i reckon if you're going to keep piranha you'll have to settle for a species only tank.

Hope this helps

I have to agree..... to me, and mind you, it's my opinion only, Piranha are the most boring eating machines I have ever kept.... they have a constant "you know I'm gonna eat ya" look about them.

I think most people keep them for the "Awe" factor but for the space they need and the care necessary to keep their Quarters clean, I can find lots of more interesting Fish. The only time I got excited with them was when they showed signs of breeding, any plant in the Tank was mown to the butt and their colours (the Fish) intensified but they started to Eye my Hands so they had to go.

Yeah i agree, good hardy fish and also have the added benefit of freaking out my wife!! She won't go near the tank at all and is convinced they just follow her around giving her dirty looks!! I don't have any recent pics or vids because the lights were broken for a long time. Back fixed now though so i'll have to get an updated vid up!
