Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Large Community Fish

Guys,
I am looking for advice on the restock of my 5 foot tank.
I would like to see some large community fish with character in the tank with some smaller active species providing background activity.
I am not looking at hardwater Cichlid species as this would mean a complete change to the current setup.
I was thinking of a Severum but not sure what are suitable tank mates.
I do not think an Oscar would suit a community setup.
I am thinking of some Barbs to provide the activity in the tank such as Rosy barbs or Ruby barbs.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a tank like this and everyone gets on fine. Tank has been running for about 3 years. Contents are

jack dempsey
green severum
gold severum
2 bala sharks
ghost knife fish
clown knife fish
angel fish
pictus catfish
rainbow snakehead
true blue snakehead
a few cory catfish
hujeta gar aka silver gar
small arowana

The jack dempsey chases the severums a bit but never does anything to them. These are adults and have them around three years and are great characters and are lively.

The balla sharks are nice and lively too - my wife loves these

The clown knife fish and silver gar and snakeheads might be my fav in here but all are really nice fish.

All of these get on fine and are pretty big. I wouldn't risk putting an oscar in there though because i'd say he'd upset the balance.

The severums are nice and friendly too and look great when nice and big - i've never seen them chase any of the other fish

Might be a strange mix of fish for some people but i like it.

Oh and with some of these you wouldn't want smaller fish in there - the silver gar will try to eat anything

Hope that helps.

Thanks Ski for the list.
I will research all of the mentioned fish.
I would love to see any pictures of this setup you may wish to share.
Are plants ok in this setup.
I also like large Tinfoil Barbs with their deep bodies but I believe they are plant eaters.

I don't have any plants in there because i had four silver dollars in there and they kept eating them.

I think your plants should be okay with that fish list but i'm not 100% certain.

I don't have any current pics but here's a link to a few i posted in March

Here's the two lastest additions. Don't have any pics of the clown knife fish but think it's a really cool fish
