Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi, all. I have a bit of an issue which has me stumped.

Background: Juwel Rekord600. 1 Pleco, 3 Guppy, 4 Platy, 6 Neon Tetra, 2 Balloon Molly, 2 Peppercat's.
Ammonia 0 - Nitrite 0 - PH 7.6 - Nitrate 20.

About 4 weeks ago one of my Platys started loosing its ability to swim and stayed sat at bottom of tank, sometimes coming to top, but mainly seemed to be unable to swim up. Treated for swimbladder as per instructions but sadly it died after about 6 days of looking poorly. 2 weeks later a guppy seemed to exhibit similar symptoms and died within 3 days. This morning a platy which seemed perfect last night was just floating around lifeless in tank, still alive but like in a coma. Was getting nipped by Balloon Molly but was unable to move away but fight back, died within an hour. It was like a leaf in the wind.

Any idea have I a water issue or infection that could be causing these similar deaths. Still a noob so not sure what to look out for. Also noticed a fry swimming around this evening, completely unsure what to do with him.

Any help appreciated.

How big is that plec?

Are the mollies bullying? (they have the right mouth shape to rip at scales)

Have you been noting any scales missing on dead fish?

Tank up and running about 4 months, 25% water change every 4-5 days to keep Nitrate under control.

Pleco is about 2.5 inches long. Mollies only introduced last week, first 2 deaths before this. Haven't noticed any scales etc missing off the last dead fish. Mollies seem to be miding their own business, but then again who knows what happens during the night.

At 20ppm is my Nitrate still a bit high? Noticed on first 2 deaths they were bent in shape head to tail as you looked down on them. I have a Nitrax sponge in my filter,

Your 20 reading of Nitrates, in my opinion is borderline, it should be lower preferably especially if anything else is going on in the background.

Yes I am mains water, passed through a water softener before it hits the tap. I use Aquaplus to treat water before adding to tank.

Water softener?

Depending on what type of water softener it is, your fish that you have lost so far would not take too kindly to 'soft water'. But then Mollies also don't like soft-water.

There is always the potential that the dead fish had a stress in their earlier days that has resulted in a delayed death.

Without more info, pictures or whatever, it is not to get to the exact reason without much speculating.
