Ram Problem
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Guys,
I have a 120L planted community tank. About 6 months ago i bought 6 rams (2 German, 2 Gold, 2 Electric Blue). Within 2 days all six had died. All other fish incl cardinal tetra, rummy nose tetra and cory cats had been in 3+ months and were still doing really well. Still have them all now. I went to my lfs where I bought them and all the rest of their stock was fine. I bought 1 gold ram and to this day is still thriving away in the tank.
Last weekend I bought 5 rams (2 German, 2 Electric Blue and 1 Gold). Again the 2 German didnt even last a day! Others seem to be grand at the minute. Very active an that. The 2 Germans stayed near the top of tank and seemed to be breathing fast. kH 4 which i ensure never changes. pH fine, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0-5ppm. temp 26C. I saw no fighting or territorial behaviour if any kind. Never had an issue with this current setup besides this (or any other set up for that matter)
Am i missing something? Are there any special requirements for rams I should know about?

Rams can be a sensitive fish at times.
Did you change anything in the tank the same time you added the rams,
I was talking to a breeder not long ago about ram, he actually breeds them himself also but he was saying that he would recommend anyone who keeps rams to worm them often
Again i haven't had much dealings with rams so i can only go by what he has told me
Maybe someone else can add to this and we try get your problem sorted
By the way Welcome to the forum would be great for you to post in the Introduce yourself Section and tell us all about yourself and your tanks

I kept Discus for two years but could not keep electric blue rams for more than two months.
I thought it was down to NITRATE levels in the tank which were difficuly to maintain at low levels in at 175ltr tank.
More expert fish keepers on the forun may have something to say on this.
I have not stocked rams since.

Unfortunately Decent Rams are really at a premium nowadays and most of the ones we are offered come from the Far East where they are (literally) mass-produced and the poor Fish are quite inferior as a result.
The upshot of this is that many purchased Rams don't last very long (unfortunately). They were never the hardiest of Fish at the best of times so try, in future (if at all possible) to find a shop selling European-bred ones - they are generally a bit more expensive, but well worth the extra.
Much the same comment applies to most, if not all, Dwarf Cichlids.
It's worth mentioning, too, that Rams are very territorial Fish and that a 120l tank would really only accommodate one, or at best two pairs - and even then it would need judicious positioning of rocks and plants to ensure that there was a well-defined area of 'no man's land' between the two territories.
Having said that, before now I have even kept two pairs in a 60l tank, but there was always an 'uneasy truce' which was always on the verge of descending into an outright battle! (And ultimately that's what happened).

Appreciate the advice lads. I have thought 6 was possibly a bit of a long shot. At present final 4 seem content. Im going to leave it at that. Leave well enough alone! Ha ha

. I did pay a substantial amount more for fish i still have than the ones I lost.
Small tanks are much harder to keep!!!
