Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

This Might be a Dumb question,,,

Ive a cichlid, he's about 4 inches,I thin he is a peacock kinda baby blue coloured head body varies baby blue to yellowish vertical stripes that are fading and bright yellow fins and tail.. have him since he was tiny along with other cichlids and others in the tank, have fishys about 5 months , he is one the biggest ,,anyways checked the water today and all is ok.. anyways do cichlids get epilepsy??? he keeps tilting to the side an having fits? like he is having a fit,, then he yawns n swims off?
if there is someone out there whos had ciclids for years and is roaring laughing can u tell me is this normal?
all the others seem to be ok its just him? am i missing something in the water?

he could be displaying to a female? i'm new to african cichlids myself but before my peacocks bred the male displeyed by opening out his fins fully and almost vibrating. sounds similar to what you've described. maybe someone else with more experience could jump in here?

Was it shortly after feeding ?
I saw a severum do something like this last week.
I thought he might have been choking or trying to cough up food as theyre terrible.for scoffing as much as they can into their mouths then have to try re-eat the food.

Hi Fiona,

different species i know, but if you look at the video on this link, the male does a "dance" about 1m20s into the clip. If your Cichlid is behaving like this, its definitely dosplaying to a female.

Cheers,

Bill.

 yip that would be it alright,, except lasts wayyyyyyy longer ,, he must have it bad ! yeah there are females alright but one is in love with the pleco ! and the other is only about 3 inches and there maybe another but im not sure what sex it is... i really am clueless still at least its nothing serious was worried incase it was something toxic or something. I think yes they are some type of alumacara but i thin they are mixed with something . so next stupid question if they are going to have fry will i just let them be and let nature ( mr fat livingstronii) be nature or should i take them out and euthanise them ? i dont really see any point in keeping moggys breeding with more moggys...
thanks guys..

yeah i think I'll leave them to it,, if he ever does anything more than just pose and shake! I dont think i could euthanise them unless there was something very wrong with a fish.

As has been said, let nature take it course.

That is just someone trying to impress girls on the dancefloor with attempts at John Travaolta moves. :)

So would this be the same with a Heros sp ?
or was it just food related ?
