Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys, i noticed last week that one of my neons had started to look a bit skinny . on closer inspection i spotted that his anal area looked a bit swolen.Since last week one of my GBR's and one of my rummies are displaying the exact same problems. They are not acting in anyway different from the other fish and are swimming and feeding as normal. No new fish have been added to the tank and all water perameters are fine. any idea's?

Cheers Stuart.

This might even be an internal 'blockage' (I know that one myself, but that's another story).
In the old days we would use Daphnia as a laxative (for the fish, not their keeper) but I have heard in more recent times treating with epsom salts can work (like it can for the keeper!) but I have never tried this. Can you get hold of any daphnia? (I would guess that frozen would work at a pinch). Anyway, that would be my first plan of action if the fish are feeding well still.
Any other suggestions from the members?

De-shelled Peas also work.

The Aquatic Village reqularly have live daphnia from their pond in the back.
Ian gives a bag full with every purchase. He keeps them in a tank at the counter.
Give Ian a call to confirm he has some available.

Unfortunately Stuart is in Macroom and that might be a bit far for him to be travelling for daphnia.

OOPS did not notice Stuart's location :silly:
Frozen daphnia maybe the best option if available in a LFS at his location.

Actually I had typed in my original answer to go to AV, but then remembered Stuart was in Cork.
So, we can all make minor mistakes - I had to re-write part of my answer.

Not too sure whether to give an answer on human bowel movements or fish bowel movements.

Coffee enemas are not good for either man nor fish.....despite anything you read on the web. :)

If it constipation with the fish, then the above posts should help.

But, have a look for any chance of worms poking their little heads out the anus.....that is always a possibility.

Thanks for the replies guys, my internet was down and couldnt get online.Yeah im in cork and have checked around my usual fish spots but cant find dalphina. I could get it online i suppose but last night i notice that my GBR that was displaying the the bulging anus had actually died.I cant see any sign of worms in their poo or coming out of their anus.So as it stand now a neon and a GBR have died and i still have one rummy who is probably beyond the point of rescue. the other fish are acting and eating as normal and are showing no signs of it at all.So at this point i think its too late for the little rummy who i might take out later and help him on his way :( . i still find it strange tough how it effected 1 fish in each of the 3 main types in the tank?

Any way cheers for the help, pity i didn't pick up on it sooner i might have been able to save them.

Stuart.
