Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I KILLED my fish

:(

Today was probably one of the worst days ever in the hobby for me. After the weekly water change on Tuesday evening i forgot to replug the heater then went away to Dublin to return today to see fish floating everywhere. I lost a shoal of 20 cardinals, and my 2 flying fox. My 6 odessas survived and 4 of the 5 rainbows did, the fifth is upside down, alive and breathing but i cant get him going, ive even held him in my hand in the water to give him warmth. I think he will not make it. Amazingly the other 4 rainbows are staying close to him, as if keeping him company (and they were in BAD shape, i cant believe they came back, literally they were lying on the bottom of the tank) There are 2 ottos unaccounted for ( ive seen the other 3)

The temp was at an amazingly low 13c! (my house is freezing when empty) After boiling just one kettle of the tank water and pouring it into the tank, the odessas and rainbows were fine.

I feel sick, and so guilty! Im not looking for sympathy, its my stupidity and own fault for not double checking, just wanted to share and get it off my chest to people who will understand my pain!

Hey J

Sorry to hear that Man
Big loss
similar things have happened to Me and I'm sure most of Us at one time or another
there's no point in beating Yourself up over it
You might aswel just mark it down as experience and block it from Your mind

Happens to the Best of Us

if it helps ease Your pain, I had a 850 litre Tank burst on Me after only 3 months...

Heres a tip to combat forgetting to plug your heater back in.
You should have an idea of the water level when draining off your tank now.
So now lower your heater to below this level, next time you wont have to plug it out.

Very sorry to hear about what happened.

I know it feels s*** but you'll get back. I thought I would quit completely when my fish was killed by paint fumes but eventually I got over it (sort of).
