Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Looking good mate. I would add a load more leaves and bogwood though. Nannachromis can be very aggressive towards each other so loads of hiding places are a must. Usually the females killing the males. Also wouldn't worry too much about dithers, mine have never bothered with any other fish. Also all the ones I have kept have never spawned in a cave. They always make their own, usually by digging underneath a rock or bogwood.

Hope this helps

Jamie

you could put a few put a few Golden pencil fish (Nannostomus beckfordi), African glass catfish (Pareutropius buffei), Congo tetras (Phenacogrammus interruptus), yellow Congo tetras (Hemigrammopetersius caudalis) and African red-eye tetras (Arnoldichthys spilopterus) or my favourite, Local Politicians (Gobshiteus Maximus) as they are always fecking diddering........

@Jamie cheers I'll get some more wood at the weekend, I have more leaves so I'll stick them in. Would you build formations or just add some rock and let them rearrange?

They don't tend to re arrange things. Just make sure the wood/rocks are big enough that they can dig under them without it collapsing in on top of them.
What species are you getting? I'm happy that there are others will ing to have a go at the more 'difficult' fish

What kind of leaves are they? (Personal fascination of mine)

@Jamie Thanks, Hopefully getting Nanochromis parilus provided they arrive should hopefully have them 1st week of March.

@LemonJelly They're Catappa leaves I just cut them into smaller pieces as they were the JBL Catappa XL and looked too big compared to everything else in the tank but have some beech here waiting to go in.

Hiding sites. Hiding Sites. Hiding sites.

If you trouble from one of the fish, then introduce them gradually as with Siamese fighter breeding....ie a glass partition and allow a fish to "welcome" the other into their territory.

Emperor tetras are one of the best mixer fish (not really dither fish). They are pretty good about being moved as well....and that could be useful if the Nanochromis start breeding.

@Ian
What would you suggest for hiding spaces? The same as Jamie, i.e root/rock mix?
Re the divide would an ordinary tank divider do or would it be better to use a transparent material?

I've recently installed something instant off-the-shelf. They are clay pipes for shrimps. Very useful for the babies to hide in.

I would add a variety of hiding places and at different heights. I also include some floating plastic flower pots for the ones that need to cower high up.

One of the things I also do is to make sure that there is a means of escape from a hide-out as well.
