Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

got 6 black-winged hatchetfish in seahorse on saturday. they were among the first fish i kept in my first tank and i'd forgotten just how cool they are. now these fish know how to shoal! i'd recommend them to anyone, as long as they're cautious opening the cover  and as long as you don't have a tank on a low cabinet. they make zebra danios look like pearl divers by comparison

I saw them during the weekend... I wanted to get a few for my self but my new aquarium doesnt have a cover yet.

I had them before too. Unfortunately mine were sucked into the filter... so make sure your filter is properly sealed (either with a sponge or a net) or that the intake is not wide enough to fit a hatchet!

never had that problem! i don't think the intake is wide enough on mine to fit them and anyway, they NEVER dive that deep

Another good reason to remove internal jewel filters. The hatchets dont have to dive anywhere as intake is close to water surface....

hatchets aside, removing that filter is one of the best moves i made

Hi im just learning , what do you mean a net on your filter? I had a guppie stuck to my filter not sure thats what killed him but i like the idea of the net just in case.

The net is mostly to prevent small fish to get sucked in by the filter. This shouldnt be a problem with bigger fish. Some fish enjoy resting on the intake (my betta for example), most fish will be strong enough to break free. Your guppie probably died somewhere in the aquarium and the current brought him there.

I have two external filters running in my aquarium, in one of them I use a surface skimmer (i think its called). This keeps my top layer clean from debris as well as this thin shinny layer that sometimes appears.

It looks like this

So I made a few modification to prevent fish from being sucked in. In fact, yesterday I bought some cheap filter sponge to add it to the top of the filter, as I have to stop the filter I decided to change the polishing pads of my 305. I dissasembled the filter and pour some water into the toilet so it wouldnt spill all over the place, then I replaced the pads and put the filter back together. Added the new sponges to the top of the filter (I might take a picture later when I get home if anyone is interested in seeing it) and got the filter started! A few minutes later I was about to flush the toilet and guess what I found inside.... one of my neon tetras!! I quicly put him back in the aquarium, the poor fella got the fright of his life! I did a head count and everyone seems to be accounted for.

I can't understand how they can sell a product like that, in fact, I lost 3 kuhlis and 4 hatches because of that filter skimmer! I am hoping the new mods I made will prevent more fish from getting sucked in

The filter is on "probation" at the moment, if I am not quite convinced of how is working I will remove it and revert back to the original intake.

The other internal filter, a jbl e701, intake is immersed.
