Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Ok so I bought 4 of these on Sunday, brought them home and notice (before I put them in the tank) that one of the little ones was swimming erratically, mostly sideways.

For a moment, I though of putting him on a nano tank I had him in quarantine for a week but the ph in that tank atm was around 7.8, so I knew that if Id move him there he would likely not survive (the pH in the bag was around 6), in the end, I went ahead and threw him in the main tank (the pH there is much lower, around 6.6) and its also more suitable for him and his mates (more hiding places etc).

That was yesterday, I thought he would die sometime during the night but a few minutes ago I checked and he was still there, trying to munch on a pellet. To be honest I am not too confident he will survive but I have to try my best.

At this point I have managed to lower the pH on my other tank down to 7.2 (naturally) so is now more suitable for him, so my question, should I move him there now or there is no point?

I doubt very much he has something contagious but if he does better move him sooner than later, the problem is, but if I do, the chances are he wont survive, even if the acclimatization process between tanks is done very slowly, however, at the moment, he is not in a good shape, and the clown loaches can be very competitive when its feeding time!

I think I know what the issue is, I think one of his fins is damaged and thats why he is swimming like this. I guess I better leave him alone although I dont know what are the chances of him surviving this... anybody had any similar experiences?

The fin problem might well be a side effect of something more sinister.

I would suggest you return this fish back to from whence it came and request a replacement.

Hi John

Thanks for your help. You are probably right, could be an infection or something worse but I am a bit stubborn sometimes...

My LFS has already told me they can take the fish back and to bring it over anytime, but I know that if I do that and put him under more stress he will die.

What I am going to do is move him and his mates to my nano and treat them with medicine (my LFS told me which one I needed but can't remember the name now). I will pop over to my LFS tomorrow during lunch and get some.

My LFS even told me that they will give me another one even if I decide to keep this one. I am going to do my best and see if I can save the little fella.

Fingers crossed now

Good for you - an attitude to be highly commended.

Will be interested to see how the little lad fares - if he dies it won't be for the lack of trying to save him.

Hey lads

I will do my best. The little one is in the nano with 2 other of his friends. I was going to move the forth one but I couldn't catch him so I assumed he wanted to stay, also, if he was sick he would be moving much slower.

Thanks for the offer Ger, unfortunately I live in Sandyford so its probably not worth it.

PS: Actually I was going to go to the cinema tomorrow in Parnell St so I might kill to birds with one shot and take you on that offer. Can you PM me your mobile please?

Thanks again!

Hey guys

Just an update, unfortunately Adolfito passed away yesterday morning. He was found beside the heater facing the glass... He was buried in the toilet and is in fish heaven now.

He lasted for a while, tbh although I was hoping otherwise I wasnt expecting him to live for so long so fair play to him I hope he didnt suffer. In the process however another one of the cory passed away, so I lost 2 in total. The remaining two are still alive and very lively!

I am sorry for them, but I suppose its life!

thanks anyway specially Ger for your help on this

Well done on taking the time and effort to try to rescue the fish.

Can you still go back to the shop and claim the offered replacement(s)?

Hi John

I am sure I can, John already told me he will give me another one if this one died, I am not too worried about it although adolfis are rare and not cheap. I was there this morning to pick up my new aquarium but they didnt have any left. There is no rush anyway the remaining two are happy enough shoaling with their cousins the pandas.

Was some experience, but I didnt my best, might take Homer Simpsons advice from now on... "you try your best and failed miserably... lesson learnt... never try"

...or - "if you never try - you never learn"

I suppose it comes down to the same moral really.

New tank, eh?

Get snapping away.

Or "if you dont try you'll never succeed!" ;)

I was joking anyway, I rather try and regret it than dont and regret not trying!

Enough sayings now...
:)
New Marine tank, my first, I had it made to fit my living room cabinet. Its a small 80 l opti white.

It was going to be freshwater initially but after some thinking now I am planning in building a 780 l... maybe... if the wife doesnt divorce me first, our apartment is not very big :P
