Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have two of these in a community tank and one chases everything
Could I move him in with the African cichlids I seen one in with cichlids before
So I am just wondering would it be ok for me to move mine?
The second red tail is small and never got much of a chance to grow could I put him in with tiger barbs?

I had one of these couple of years back .. They are a nice fish , however after a while as it got bigger it becamce a real pain .. It was in with ruby and odessa barbs but it would chase and chase them espeacilly at meal time .. Really territotial fish , had to remove him eventaully ..

so I would say put him in with the barbs and hope for the best , wouldnt put it with the ciclids myself

It should live - well, exist - in with the African Cichlids, although conditions would be far from what this fish would have been used to in the wild. But there again, this Red Tail will have never witnessed life in the wild anyhow, they are 'factory-bred' in the Far-east.
They are such an aggressive fish - especially to others of the same species - that I've never successfully kept two together without one gradually getting so harrowed that it 'gave up the ghost'.
My suspicion is that to keep more than one successfully would need a huge tank plus a shoal of them - has anyone ever done this?
As to your smaller one - it should gradually regain some strength once it becomes the only Red Tail in the tank. Putting it in with your Tiger Barbs might be not the best thing to do until it starts to become a little more assertive as it might just be jaded by them for a while and not get any (or at least enough) food.
Does anyone else have any suggestions regarding these fish?

the 190 so .. the 100 will get too small for it , and as of now it will drive the barbs mad ..

Scrap what I said above and try it in the bigger tank , just monitor and see what happens . Its a pity they are so aggressive as they are a nice fish

I have to agree with you there, but that's nature - I suppose.

...as a temporary home, certainly. You'll be aware already though how quickly they can grow and how 'messy' they can be.

The bigger of the two are now in with the cichlids
He was not in a minute when he started chasing the catfish he was soon put in his place when
The big boss of the tank male yellow lab now he looks settled but I will keep a eye on him.
The smaller of the two red tail is still in the community tank and hopefully he will start to eat more and grow.

Thanks for all the help.
