Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just got back from a 2 week holiday to find that my feeder had only dispensed a couple of feeds while I was away. Bloody jewel feeder broke down should have been empty but was near full as I left it & my cichlids were left starving for the last fortnight..............Incredibly not one of them died, instead when I walked into the room they were straight up to the front of the tank to be fed. I had feared the worst as the last time I was away for a week my heater went wallop in that cold weather last October & I was all but wiped out by the cold. Boy was I lucky this time!!! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Have to admit, I really struggle to trust auto feeders
I tried a holiday food for my cichlids last time I went away for a week...... came home to a tank full of stressed fish with next to no colour in them

Wont be using that stuff again anyway

At least all was well but I also wouldn't use an auto feeder or holiday foods.. their both recipes for disaster! They also get damp inside and can let out clumps of food to rot at the tank bottom
In future if you can leave someone to feed your fish and check on gear that would be ideal. You could leave a pill box with daily food rations so you know whats going in. They could only feed every few days also.
I have left my fish in darkness without food for up to couple of weeks without hassle so I think your biggest concern would be a malfunction of equipment.

I recently went away on holidays for 2 weeks. I didnt trust anyone to feed the fish so I decided to buy an auto feeder. First I bought the Juwel but I returned it as I wasnt 100% happy with it. I have too many different type of fish, some of them eat flakes, some others pellets. Some are bottom dwellers, some others only eat flakes, others only pellets, some fast eaters others arent, etc. I was having problems getting all this type of different foods into one feeders so I decided to buy two. I bought the fishmate automated feeder and the Eheim.

After some fiddling I realized that the fishmate worked best with pellets and as well as NLS, not so well with flakes as the fishmate tends to clog if you dont connect an airstone to it and I noticed that when using pellets and NLS the fishmate doesnt seem to clog at all; I filled the eheim with flakes and tetra discs.

When I came back they were both working well, even my betta was happy enough (he is a slow eater) as well as my ghost knife fish. I will need to buy anotherone for my new marine tank, the eheim has a built in air ventilation that prevent clogging so I will likely get another one of those, I think it costs around 34 euro in amazon.

Them auto feeders are sh*** just as well you have cichlids they are bullet proof any other fish would have been floating, next time rope a friend in for every second day feeding

Where the tongue slips, it speaks the truth.

A life making mistakes is not only more honourable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing at all.

I have a fishmate as well and I'm pretty happy with it. It works well as long as the right food is put in it as already mentioned by Bohrio. The first time I used it didn't know that little trick and after a week away came back to find that only a days worth of food was dispensed. Luckily, none on my fish died.

Only recently I was away for more than 2 weeks and after I came back I noticed that my usually shy cardinals came out looking for food at the time and place where the feeder was while in holiday.
