Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all i was just wondering what the price are for L046 in Ireland at the minute or is it possible to get them there. The price seems to be very high in the pet store here.I have another option but it will be the patience option as they are only about 4-5 cm in size and F1 quaility.
L-046 Hypancistrus zebra VF 240 euro each or 10 for 2032 euro.Adults.

Hi,
I've only heard of a single pair going for around €500
In emerald aquatics

Anyone with a aquarium can keep fish,
But it takes real skill to be a fish keeper,

They were looking for €750 when they 1st got them... I laughed at them... and pity anyone who paid near €500 for them unless they had more of a similar size.
Seahorse had a pair (well maybe 2 as opposed to a pair) but nearly certain they wanted €300 for the 2. Ye might give that for wilds, which they are supose to be, but I wouldn't give it for a f1 or t/b L046... they can't be collected from the wild anymore so be sure what you get is what you ask for B)

The VF are 100% certified so they are. I have no doubt they are wild catch i know the man who works there well he is a personal friend of mine and he has 3 groups himself. Its the size that has me drawn , ready for breeding mind you it can be hard to get them started to breed 1st time and it gets allot easier he tells me.He uses camera for flashing and water changes for one week of 60% and has success every time.Keeps them at 29c and drops it to around 24 c each water change. He also put a wave maker to increase the current in the tank for that week also. The F1 cost around 70 euro each but i will have to wait for them to come to size.

I have seen two juveniles for 350.

The camera flashing sounds innovative, never heard of that before.

Apparently it is to mimic lighting. It does not effect them from what i have read. Its a torch or light shining directly on them which they hate and get stressed over.

Very clever, note taken for future reference.

If it works for the L046 I’m sure it can be employed for other Loricariids too.

Perhaps taking some snaps at the same time will let the owner know what’s going on in the tank after dark too, as a secondary effect.

I know he also take the temp down over time each day. Does a water change and drops the temp from 29c to 26.5 around and then leaves heater off for around 2 hours until the temp has dropped to around 24c. Then he puts it back on and let it go back to 29c. I have used the same method with good success with my L107

How does he simulate thunder?

70e is very cheap for this species and the UK or Irish price would be much higher, probably double this.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish

He uses a flash off a camera that's all he does.
